Canada in April: Cherry Blossoms in Vancouver, Tulips in Ottawa, Shoulder Season Prices

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

April is the month Canada wakes up. Cherry blossoms appear in Vancouver in quantities that rival Japan. Ottawa’s tulip fields are about to explode. Montreal’s terrasse culture starts cautiously reopening. And because summer tourism hasn’t kicked in yet, prices across the board are at their annual low. This is one of the best-value months to visit Canada.

Weather & Conditions

Vancouver: 10–14°C, still rainy but the cherry blossoms don’t care. Spring arrives earlier here than anywhere else in the country. Parks and residential streets are in full bloom for most of April.

Calgary / Alberta: 2–12°C, unpredictable. Snow is still possible in April — sometimes significantly. The Rockies retain snow; late-season skiing continues at Sunshine Village (which often stays open until late May).

Toronto: 5–13°C. Cold to start, warming through the month. High Park’s cherry blossoms typically peak in late April — a major annual event.

Ottawa / Eastern Ontario: 4–12°C. The tulip fields at Commissioners Park don’t peak until May, but late April sees the first blooms.

Montreal: 5–13°C. The city re-emerges from winter. Terrasses open, sometimes optimistically, in late April.

Nova Scotia / Maritimes: Still cold (3–8°C), but coastal winters break and the lobster fishing season opens.

What to Do

Cherry blossoms in Vancouver (Kerrisdale, West Point Grey, VanDusen): Vancouver has over 50,000 cherry trees, and April is when most of them peak. The residential streets of Kerrisdale are lined with them. The VanDusen Botanical Garden and Queen Elizabeth Park both have spectacular displays. Unlike Tokyo’s cherry blossom sites, you’re not fighting crowds ten-deep.

High Park Cherry Blossoms, Toronto: High Park’s Sakura trees bloom in late April — sometimes early May depending on the year. The city tracks them closely and announces peak dates. Early morning visits avoid the crowds that gather on weekends.

Ottawa Canadian Tulip Festival (preview): The full festival runs in May, but late April sees early tulips blooming at Commissioners Park on Dow’s Lake. Walking the park without the festival crowds is actually preferable.

Banff National Park in shoulder season: April is one of the quietest months in Banff — ski season is winding down, summer hiking isn’t ready, and the town is quiet. Hotels are at their cheapest. The scenery (still snowy mountains, elk and bighorn sheep visible on highway shoulders) is outstanding.

Cape Breton Highlands (Nova Scotia): The Cabot Trail through Cape Breton is one of the world’s great coastal drives. April is too early for peak foliage but the dramatic cliffs, ocean views, and empty roads make it worthwhile for anyone willing to accept cool weather.

Festivals & Events

Canadian Tulip Festival (Ottawa, late April into May): One of the world’s largest tulip festivals, with over a million tulips planted across the city. The festival officially runs in May but the Commissioners Park display often begins in late April. Admission to the park itself is free.

Toronto International Bicycle Show (April): A niche but well-attended cycling trade event at the International Centre. For cycling-inclined travelers, it’s a useful introduction to Canada’s cycling culture.

Easter Weekend: A significant domestic travel weekend. Mountain resorts, cottage country, and east coast destinations fill up. Book accommodation 4–6 weeks ahead if traveling over Easter.

Toonik Tyme (Iqaluit, Nunavut, late April): An Inuit spring festival celebrating the return of the sun. Traditional games, dog team racing, igloo-building competitions, and country food feasts. One of Canada’s most authentic cultural events — remote, but unique.

Practical Tips

April is the best month for hotel prices in Canadian cities. Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver are all 20–40% cheaper than summer rates. This is the window before summer bookings kick in.

Cherry blossom timing varies by 1–2 weeks year to year. Vancouver Botanical Gardens and the City of Vancouver track bloom progress online — check before booking for the specific window.

In the Rockies, April weather is genuinely unpredictable. Carry layers and waterproof gear regardless of the forecast.

The one downside: some attractions and seasonal businesses are still in winter mode. Certain national park facilities, whale-watching operators, and coastal tourism businesses don’t open until mid-May.

Who April Is For

Budget travelers who want Canada’s scenery without summer prices. Anyone who times travel around specific natural events — the cherry blossoms in Vancouver are a legitimate travel reason in April. And travelers who prefer empty national parks and accessible iconic sites over the crowded summer versions.
