Vancouver Transport Guide for World Cup 2026
Plan your trip
Vancouver’s transit network (TransLink) integrates SkyTrain rapid transit, buses, the SeaBus ferry to North Vancouver, and the West Coast Express commuter rail. For World Cup visitors, the SkyTrain covers almost every relevant destination — the airport, BC Place, the main neighborhoods, and the Richmond Chinese food district are all directly on SkyTrain lines.
The SkyTrain
Vancouver’s automated (driverless) rapid transit network operates three lines:
Expo Line (blue): The original 1986 line — connects Waterfront Station (downtown) east through Main Street–Science World (walking distance to BC Place’s south gate), Commercial Drive, and out to Surrey/Langley. The Stadium-Chinatown Station is the direct BC Place station, one stop east of Waterfront.
Millennium Line (yellow): Branches from the Expo Line at Commercial-Broadway, connecting VCC-Clark, Renfrew, and a new branch to Arbutus (opening 2025). Less relevant for most World Cup movements.
Canada Line (light blue): Vancouver’s airport and Richmond line — connects YVR Airport through Richmond to Vancouver City Centre and Waterfront. The most relevant line for airport arrivals and Richmond food excursions.
Operating hours: Approximately 5am to 1:30am on weekdays; extended service on Friday/Saturday nights. Enhanced service on match days.
The Compass Card
TransLink’s rechargeable contactless transit card — works on all SkyTrain, buses, SeaBus, and West Coast Express routes.
Where to get it: All SkyTrain stations, London Drugs, and Shoppers Drug Mart locations. $6 CAD card deposit (refundable); load a minimum $10 CAD.
Fare structure:
- 1-zone (within Vancouver proper): $3.10 CAD
- 2-zone (to Richmond, Burnaby, North Vancouver): $4.45 CAD
- 3-zone (to Surrey, Coquitlam): $6.05 CAD
- YVR Airport surcharge: $5 CAD extra on top of the regular zone fare
Day Pass: $11.25 CAD — unlimited rides on all modes for one day. Worth it if you’re making more than 3 journeys.
Airport Connection (Canada Line)
Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is connected to downtown by the Canada Line — the most efficient airport transit connection in Canada.
YVR to Waterfront Station (downtown): 26 minutes. Runs every 3–8 minutes during peak hours. Fare: $3.10 (1-zone) + $5 YVR surcharge = $8.10 CAD with Compass Card.
Transfer at Waterfront Station: If coming from the airport to BC Place, transfer at Waterfront Station to the Expo Line eastbound (1 stop to Stadium-Chinatown).
Taxi from airport: $35–55 CAD to downtown; 25–45 minutes depending on traffic. The Canada Line is always faster and significantly cheaper.
Getting to BC Place
Expo Line to Stadium-Chinatown Station (recommended): 1 stop from Waterfront Station. The station is directly adjacent to the east gates of BC Place. $3.10 CAD (1-zone).
Walking from downtown:
- From Gastown: 20 minutes south on Cambie to Pacific Boulevard
- From Yaletown: 15 minutes east along the False Creek seawall
- From Waterfront Station: 20 minutes south through the stadium district
False Creek Ferries approach: Take a False Creek Ferry from the Yaletown dock ($4.50 one way) to the Science World dock, adjacent to BC Place’s south side.
Cycling: Protected bike lanes on Dunsmuir and Hornby Streets connect downtown to the stadium area. Mobi Bike Share has stations near all routes.
False Creek Ferries and Aquabus
Two competing small ferry services operate on False Creek — connecting downtown, Yaletown, Granville Island, and Science World (adjacent to BC Place):
False Creek Ferries: $4.50–7 CAD per leg depending on route. Runs approximately 7am–10pm daily in summer. Stops: Hornby Street Dock (downtown), Aquatic Centre (Sunset Beach), Granville Island, David Lam Park (Yaletown), Stamp’s Landing, and Science World.
Aquabus: Similar service, similar prices. Stops: Hornby Street, Granville Island, and various False Creek locations.
For World Cup visitors, the most useful ferry route is Yaletown → Granville Island (eat at the market) → Science World/BC Place (arriving at the south side of the stadium). The whole chain takes 20 minutes by ferry and is one of the more pleasant match-day approaches available.
SeaBus
The passenger ferry connecting Waterfront Station (downtown) to Lonsdale Quay (North Vancouver) — a 12-minute crossing. The only practical public transit to North Vancouver and the North Shore mountains.
Fare: $3.10–4.45 CAD (same zone system as SkyTrain). Day passes work on SeaBus.
For World Cup visitors: The view of the Vancouver skyline from the SeaBus crossing — the downtown towers, the North Shore mountains directly behind — is one of the best city views available for no additional cost.
Cycling
Vancouver has one of the best urban cycling networks in North America — separated lanes on key routes throughout the downtown core.
Mobi Bike Share: Docked e-bikes and regular bikes. $10/day unlimited 30-minute rides; $3 extra for e-bike trips. Stations throughout downtown, Kitsilano, and False Creek. App required for unlocking.
Key cycling routes for World Cup visitors:
- Seawall (22 km continuous): From Kitsilano Beach east to Gastown, circling Stanley Park and continuing east to Granville Island and False Creek.
- Dunsmuir Viaduct and Hornby Street lanes: Direct protected routes from downtown to BC Place.
- Ontario Street: The protected north-south route connecting False Creek to Cambie and south Vancouver.
Buses
TransLink buses cover the entire city; the SkyTrain covers most World Cup destinations. Buses are useful for reaching Kitsilano (Routes 2, 22 from downtown), Commercial Drive (Route 20), and other neighborhoods not on SkyTrain. Same Compass Card and fare system.
Practical Notes
- Compass Card is mandatory for convenient transit — paying cash on buses requires exact change; SkyTrain gates don’t accept cash.
- The SkyTrain is the definitive match-day transit — the Stadium-Chinatown Station puts you at BC Place’s gates with no walking.
- Pre-match SkyTrain crowds: Board at Waterfront and expect a standing-room car — the journey is only 2 minutes.
- TransLink customer service: 604-953-3333; translink.ca for schedules and match-day advisories.
