Mexico in December: Dry Season, Posadas, and the Best Weather of the Year

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

December is when Mexico is most itself during its most beautiful season. The rains that dominate summer are finished. The heat of spring hasn’t arrived. And the country celebrates the holidays with a festive intensity that’s unique — posadas, fireworks, tamales, and family gatherings that extend into the streets.

It’s also the most popular month to visit. Understand the trade-offs.

Weather in December

December marks the heart of Mexico’s dry season across most of the country.

Mexico City (CDMX): Cool and dry. 18–23°C days, 5–9°C nights. A real chill after dark — bring a jacket. The pollution clears dramatically in December’s dry air.

Oaxaca: Warm days (24–28°C), cool evenings (10–14°C). Perfect walking weather. Markets are at their most active preparing for the holidays.

Yucatán (Mérida, Valladolid, Tulum): 24–30°C, low humidity, no rain. Ideal beach and ruins weather.

Pacific Coast (Puerto Escondido, Sayulita): Dry, warm (27–31°C), calm seas. December is peak season here.

Baja California: Comfortable temperatures (20–25°C in Los Cabos), and the whale watching season begins in December in the Sea of Cortez.

The Posada Season

Las Posadas run December 16–24, commemorating Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter. In cities and towns across Mexico, neighborhoods organize nightly candlelit processions, traditional songs, piñatas, and food.

This is not a tourist performance — it’s a living tradition. Being invited into a neighborhood posada (or attending a public one in a plaza) is one of the most memorable cultural experiences Mexico offers.

Where to experience posadas:

  • Oaxaca: The most atmospheric setting, with indigenous cultural traditions overlaid on the Catholic celebration
  • Pátzcuaro, Michoacán: One of Mexico’s most famous posada cities — the lakeside plaza fills with processions and lanterns
  • Any residential neighborhood in CDMX: Walk into Coyoacán, San Ángel, or Roma Norte on any evening December 16–24

Día de los Santos Inocentes and New Year’s

December 28 is Mexico’s version of April Fools’ Day (Día de los Santos Inocentes). Not a travel event, but worth knowing.

New Year’s Eve in Mexico City: Zócalo (the main plaza) hosts a massive public celebration with live music and fireworks visible from the square. The Roma and Condesa neighborhoods have restaurant parties and street celebrations. Book any restaurant dinner weeks ahead.

Regional Highlights in December

Oaxaca: December is peak Oaxaca season. The Noche de Rábanos (Night of the Radishes, December 23) is a truly strange and beautiful tradition — elaborate scenes carved entirely from radishes displayed in the Zócalo. The Christmas markets, mezcal tastings, and posada atmosphere make late December Oaxaca one of the most festive places in Mexico.

Mérida and the Yucatán: The ruins circuit (Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Ek Balam) is most comfortable in December — dry, 25–28°C, no humidity. Morning visits to Chichén Itzá are extraordinary in December light. Stay in Valladolid for easy access to the ruins and cenotes.

Tulum and the Riviera Maya: December is peak beach season. The Caribbean water is warm (26°C), the weather is perfect. The downside: prices spike 40–60% for beach accommodation, and Tulum specifically becomes very crowded.

Whale Watching in Baja: Gray whales begin arriving in the lagoons of Baja California Sur in December. The main season is January–March, but early December sees the first arrivals. Laguna San Ignacio and Scammon’s Lagoon are the primary whale-watching sites.

Copper Canyon (Chihuahua): December is the best time for the Copper Canyon railway journey — cool but not cold at the canyon rim, clear visibility, and low visitor numbers compared to summer.

Crowds and Prices

December 20 through January 5 is high season pricing throughout Mexico.

  • Hotels: 30–50% above standard rates in tourist areas
  • Flights: High demand from the US, Canada, and Europe
  • Restaurant reservations: Essential for December 24, 25, and 31

Outside the holiday week, early-to-mid December is excellent and more affordable.

CategoryCost
Budget accommodation$30–65/night
Mid-range hotel (CDMX/Oaxaca)$80–160/night
Beach accommodation (Tulum peak)$150–400+/night
Taco from a taquería$2–5
Restaurant dinner (mid-range)$15–35
10-day trip budget$1,400–3,000

The Verdict

December is Mexico’s best month for first-time visitors: perfect weather everywhere, festive atmosphere, cultural events (posadas), and beaches at their most accessible. The trade is price — particularly around Christmas and New Year’s, accommodation surges.

Strategy: arrive December 10–15 for the posada atmosphere without peak holiday pricing. Stay through Christmas if it’s your first time in Oaxaca or CDMX — the holiday culture is worth paying the premium. Skip December 28–January 5 if budget is a concern; those days carry holiday pricing with tired post-Christmas energy.
