Kansas City Nightlife Guide for World Cup 2026
Plan your trip
Kansas City has three distinct nightlife zones: the Power & Light District (purpose-built entertainment, handles large crowds), Westport (older, more neighborhood-oriented, later hours), and 18th & Vine (live jazz, the most specifically Kansas City experience). The city closes at 3am — later than most Midwest cities, earlier than the coasts.
Power & Light District
The main entertainment zone of downtown Kansas City — a deliberately designed cluster of bars and restaurants built around T-Mobile Center arena. It handles large crowds efficiently, which makes it the default post-match gathering point.
Johnny’s Tavern (1 Power & Light District): Sports bar with multiple screens, multiple beers on tap, and the capacity to handle match-day crowds. The roof terrace is the best outdoor option in the district.
Mosaic Lounge (1 Power & Light District): Upscale cocktail bar within the district — higher-quality drinks than the sports bars, lower-volume atmosphere. Better for an evening start than post-match chaos.
The district format: The Power & Light District has a closed perimeter during events — ticket or wristband required for entry to the central plaza. For non-event nights, the area is open and walkable.
Westport
Kansas City’s oldest neighborhood has the most authentic and long-running bar scene — not designed for entertainment tourists, but for the city’s regular nightlife population.
Kelly’s Westport Inn (500 Westport Rd): The oldest bar in Kansas City, operating since 1947 in a building from 1832 (one of the few surviving pre-Civil War structures in the city). Draft beer, no frills, and the specific pleasure of drinking in a room that was here before the Civil War.
Bluebird Bistro (1700 Summit St): The neighborhood restaurant that turns into a late-night gathering point — good cocktails, local crowd, no tourist bubble.
The Riot Room (4048 Broadway): Live music venue in Westport with rock, indie, and alternative programming. Standing room, $10–20 covers, and the best small venue atmosphere in the city.
Westport hours: Bars in Westport stay open until 3am, with the most active period from midnight to 2am. The crowd is younger and more local than Power & Light.
18th & Vine: Live Jazz
The Blue Room (1600 E 18th St, inside the American Jazz Museum): The most historically significant place to hear live jazz in Kansas City — a club in the building where Kansas City jazz history is documented. Live jazz Thursday–Saturday from 8pm. Cover: $10–20.
The Green Lady Lounge (1809 Grand Blvd): The best active jazz club in Kansas City for nightly programming — a small bar with live jazz or soul every night of the week. Low key, excellent musicians, $5–10 covers or no cover on weeknights. The most consistently good live music option in the city.
Phoenix Jazz Club (302 W 8th St, downtown): Downtown jazz club with nightly programming — slightly more tourist-accessible than Green Lady but still genuine.
Crossroads Bars
The Crossroads Arts District develops a lively bar scene on weekend evenings centered on the restaurant cluster.
The Ship (1221 Union Ave): A bar inside a converted church — the stained glass and high ceilings are intact, the pews have been replaced by bar seating. Serves as both a neighborhood bar and a venue for readings, small music events, and art openings.
Screenland Armour (408 Armour Rd, North KC): A cinema-bar combination that shows arthouse and independent film alongside a well-curated beer and cocktail list. Worth the short Uber trip for a film-and-drinks evening.
Craft Beer
Kansas City has a strong craft brewery scene concentrated in the Crossroads and Westport areas.
Boulevard Brewing Co. (2501 Southwest Blvd): Kansas City’s flagship brewery and one of the largest craft breweries in the Midwest. Tours available ($10–15, includes tasting). The Smokestack series of specialty beers is nationally distributed; the Tank 7 saison is the brewery’s signature.
Cinder Block Brewery (110 E 18th Ave, North KC): Small batch, rotating taps, taproom with a neighborhood feel. Best for afternoon drinking.
Martin City Brewing Company (14320 Wyandotte St): South KC brewery with a full food menu — among the better food-brewery combinations in the city.
Practical Notes
Last call: 3am in Missouri (Kansas City).
Uber: Reliable city-wide. Post-match and post-last-call Uber surges are real — $25–45 for rides that normally cost $10–15.
Safety: Power & Light, Westport, and the Crossroads are safe at night. 18th & Vine is an evening destination for jazz but the surrounding neighborhood has lower foot traffic after midnight — Uber directly to and from the jazz clubs.
