Mercedes-Benz Stadium: World Cup 2026 Guide
Plan your trip
Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened in 2017 and immediately became one of the most discussed architectural sports venues in the world. Designed by HOK architects, the stadium’s most distinctive feature is its retractable roof — eight panels that open and close like a camera aperture, creating an oculus opening over the field. The design also incorporates an 83,000-square-foot halo video board (the largest in the world at opening) that wraps around the interior.
Home to the Atlanta Falcons (NFL) and Atlanta United FC (MLS), the stadium has hosted a Super Bowl, a College Football Playoff National Championship, and will host 8 World Cup matches in 2026. Capacity: approximately 71,000 in World Cup configuration.
Getting There
By MARTA (recommended): The most practical way to reach the stadium — no traffic, no parking, and the fare is $2.50.
- Green Line or Blue Line: Both stop at GWCC/Mercedes-Benz Stadium station (one stop from Five Points, the central downtown hub). The station is directly connected to the stadium’s plaza.
- From Hartsfield-Jackson Airport: Red or Gold Line to Five Points, transfer to Green or Blue Line — total 30–40 minutes, $2.50.
- From Midtown: Red or Gold Line south to Five Points, transfer — 15 minutes, $2.50.
By Uber: From downtown hotels: 5–10 minutes, $10–18. From Midtown: 15 minutes, $15–22. Post-match surge: $25–45. Uber drop-off and pick-up zones are on the stadium’s east and south sides.
On foot: The stadium is walkable from downtown hotels near Centennial Olympic Park — approximately 10–15 minutes from most downtown hotel clusters.
By car: Multiple parking structures adjacent to the stadium — $20–40. The surrounding road network is well-designed for post-match exit relative to other US venues, but allow 30–45 minutes to clear.
Stadium Access and Entry
Gates open: 2.5 hours before kickoff.
Entry: Electronic tickets via the FIFA ticketing app. Phone must be charged and app accessible — have a backup plan (screenshot, email with ticket QR code) if your battery is low.
The retractable roof: The roof will be open or closed based on weather. June–July Atlanta weather frequently produces afternoon thunderstorms — the retractable roof means matches can proceed in wet conditions. If closed, the stadium becomes fully covered and the atmosphere changes significantly (more echo, more contained crowd noise).
Clear bag policy: Bags must be clear and no larger than 12”×6”×12” or a 1-gallon clear zip-lock bag. No outside food or drink.
Inside the Stadium
The halo board: The wraparound video screen is one of the most impressive in-stadium technology features in the world — visible from every seat. For World Cup broadcasts of other matches during intermissions, it provides an exceptional viewing surface.
Food innovation: Mercedes-Benz Stadium has a policy of selling concessions at below-market prices — the “Fan First” initiative when the stadium opened set prices at $2 hot dogs, $3 nachos, $5 beer. Prices have risen since opening but remain meaningfully lower than comparable US stadiums. Credit cards accepted everywhere.
The Mercedes Club and premium areas: The stadium has extensive club seating and hospitality zones with upscale catering. For World Cup, many of these areas will be reserved for corporate hospitality packages.
Before and After the Match
Centennial Olympic Park (adjacent): The park between the stadium and the CNN Center/Georgia Aquarium cluster — a pre-match gathering point with open space and the park’s fountain plaza.
Castleberry Hill: The neighborhood immediately south of the stadium — a small arts district with a few bars and restaurants that fill up pre-match. More neighborhood feel than downtown tourist infrastructure.
CNN Center (Marietta St NW): The CNN headquarters building has a food court and is a 5-minute walk from the stadium plaza. Useful for pre-match coffee or a quick meal.
