Kazakhstan in December: Shymbulak Ski Season, Independence Day, and Deep Winter Almaty
Plan your trip
December is Kazakhstan’s winter beginning. Shymbulak — the ski resort in the Tian Shan above Almaty at 2,260m — opens for the ski season, typically by mid-December. Independence Day on December 16 marks the 1991 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union and is Kazakhstan’s most significant national celebration. Astana settles into its winter regime: -20°C, fur hats, steam rising from manholes, and the bizarre spectacle of the city’s futurist architecture against a white steppe horizon. For the right traveler, December in Kazakhstan is extraordinary.
Weather & Conditions
Almaty: 0 to -8°C. Cold but manageable. Snow on the streets by mid-December.
Shymbulak (ski resort, 2,260m): -5 to -15°C. Ski conditions developing from mid-December.
Astana: -12 to -25°C. Extreme cold. Full winter gear mandatory.
Charyn Canyon: -2 to 8°C. Cold and empty. Accessible in daylight hours.
Steppe: -10 to -25°C. Frozen. Not a place for visitors.
What to Do
Shymbulak ski resort: Kazakhstan’s premier ski destination sits above Almaty in the Trans-Ili Alatau range, accessible by gondola from Medeu (1,691m). The resort has 20km of groomed runs across 7 trails, ranging from beginner to advanced. December conditions are developing — early-season visitors may find limited runs open. Full season typically runs December through March. The combination of Soviet-era history (Medeu was the world’s highest outdoor skating rink, built in 1972) and modern resort infrastructure makes Shymbulak distinctive.
Independence Day, Almaty and Astana (December 16): Kazakhstan’s most important national holiday. The 1991 declaration of independence from the USSR is marked with state ceremonies, cultural events, and celebrations across the country. Almaty’s Republic Square hosts public events. Astana’s government district — the Palace of the Republic, the Ministry buildings, the Bayterek tower — is illuminated. The holiday falls in the deepest cold, which gives it a particular intensity.
Almaty New Year preparations: Kazakhstan celebrates New Year (Jaña Jıl) as the major winter holiday — a Soviet-era tradition that replaced Christmas in the secular Kazakh calendar. December in Almaty sees Soviet-style Yolka (New Year tree) decorations appearing in Panfilov Park and Republic Square. The bazaars are stocked for the New Year feast. Hotels and restaurants run New Year programs.
Medeu skating rink: The world’s highest outdoor speed skating rink (1,691m, 10,500 sq meters) is in peak condition in December. Public skating sessions run alongside speed skating training. The combination of Tian Shan backdrop and the vast Soviet-era ice surface is unlike any other skating experience.
Astana winter city experience: For travelers willing to accept -20°C, Astana in December is genuinely extraordinary. The Khan Shatyr (a 150m transparent tent housing a shopping center and indoor beach resort) becomes surreal in the context of -20°C outside. The Palace of Peace and Reconciliation pyramid. The National Museum. The Nur-Astana mosque. All functioning in extreme cold, all dramatic against the winter landscape.
Festivals & Events
Independence Day (December 16): Kazakhstan’s national day. Public events, state ceremonies, illuminations in Almaty and Astana.
New Year (Jaña Jıl) preparations: December builds toward the December 31–January 1 New Year celebrations — Kazakhstan’s biggest annual event.
Shymbulak opening: The ski resort’s season opening (typically mid-December) is a social event for Almaty’s skiing community.
Practical Tips
Astana in December: -25°C is a genuine physical challenge. Exposed skin can suffer frostbite in 10–15 minutes at these temperatures with wind. The city’s indoor infrastructure is fully operational, but plan outdoor time in short exposures. Quality winter gear is not negotiable: base layers, insulated jacket rated to -30°C, waterproof outer layer, insulated boots, hat covering ears, and windproof gloves.
Shymbulak December: the gondola from Medeu runs daily. Early December may have limited runs if snowfall has been insufficient. Check resort conditions through the Shymbulak website before booking for early December. By late December, conditions are typically reliable.
Independence Day accommodation: book Almaty or Astana accommodation 4–6 weeks ahead for December 14–17. The holiday creates domestic travel demand.
Medeu skating: public sessions run on a schedule available through the Medeu website. Skate rental is available on-site.
Who December Is For
Skiers who want a Central Asian mountain resort experience. Independence Day national celebration visitors. Kazakhstan winter character travelers — the Astana cold, the New Year preparations, the Shymbulak gondola above the snow. And anyone who understands that a country at -20°C is showing you something entirely real about itself.
