Mexico in February: Carnival, Whale Watching Peak, and the Last Dry Month Before Spring Heat

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

February is a month of competing reasons to visit Mexico. Whale watching in Baja is at its absolute peak. Carnival in Mazatlán and Veracruz is the most festive event on the Pacific and Gulf coasts. And the dry season weather — comfortable, clear, and without the spring heat — makes virtually everywhere in the country excellent for visiting.

Weather in February

Mexico City: 20–24°C days, 7–10°C at night. Clear and dry. Still wearing a jacket after sunset.

Oaxaca: 24–28°C, cool nights. Perfect walking weather. The valleys are at their greenest from December rains — an often-missed visual detail.

Yucatán: 26–30°C. February gets occasional norte fronts (cold wind from the north) that drop temperatures and cloud cover for 1–2 days before clearing. Generally excellent.

Pacific Coast: 27–31°C, dry. Surf season active in Puerto Escondido. Calm seas in Sayulita and Riviera Nayarit.

Baja: Peak whale watching weather (18–24°C), clear, almost no rain.

Carnival: Mexico’s Street Party Season

Carnival falls in the days before Ash Wednesday (typically late February or early March, depending on the Easter calendar). Mexico has two of Latin America’s most authentic carnival celebrations:

Mazatlán Carnival: One of the largest Carnaval celebrations in the Americas (alongside Rio and Barranquilla). The malecón (beachfront promenade) hosts parades, live music, food stalls, and fireworks for 5+ days. The “Combate Naval” mock sea battle on opening night is an extraordinary spectacle. Mazatlán during Carnival is packed — book 3–4 months ahead.

Veracruz Carnival: Mexico’s oldest carnival (since 1866). The port city of Veracruz — with its Caribbean cultural influence, danzón dancing, and distinct food culture (mariscos, pescado a la veracruzana) — transforms during Carnival into a different version of itself. More local than Mazatlán’s version, equally festive.

Mérida Carnival: Smaller and increasingly popular. The Yucatecan capital’s paseo carnival has traditional dress, food, and music specific to the region.

Whale Watching Peak: February is the Best Month

February is the peak of gray whale season in Baja’s lagoons. More whales, higher frequency of “friendly whale” encounters, and the lagoon camps have maximum activity.

Laguna San Ignacio in February: the highest probability of face-to-face encounters with gray whales approaching the pangas voluntarily. Book 6–8 weeks ahead.

Humpback whales in Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay: February is also peak season for humpback whale watching in the Bay of Banderas. Half-day tours from Puerto Vallarta are easy to arrange. Humpbacks are more acrobatic than gray whales — breach and tail-slap displays are common.

Best Destinations in February

Copper Canyon (Chepe Railway): The Chihuahua al Pacífico railway through Copper Canyon is excellent in February — clear mountain weather, fewer tourists than summer, and the canyon landscapes have a starkness in February light that’s different from summer green.

Guanajuato: One of Mexico’s most beautiful colonial cities, built in a ravine with colorful houses climbing the hillsides. February is ideal — university city atmosphere, low crowds, and the famous Callejón del Beso (the narrowest alley in Mexico where you can lean across and kiss from opposite balconies) accessible without a tour group.

San Miguel de Allende: The colonial art-town popular with expats and now a popular travel destination. February is pre-Easter low season — prices are manageable, the art scene is active, and the famous baroque Parroquia church is accessible. The local Carnival parade in San Miguel is small but charming.

Budget in February

Similar to January — mid-dry season pricing, with Carnival week premiums in Mazatlán and Veracruz.

CategoryCost
Budget accommodation$25–55/night
Mid-range hotel$70–140/night
Mazatlán/Veracruz (Carnival week)+25–40% premium
Whale watching (Baja day tour)$80–150/person
10-day trip budget$1,400–2,600

The Verdict

February works for multiple traveler types simultaneously: the whale-watching traveler (Baja, Puerto Vallarta), the cultural event traveler (Carnival in Mazatlán or Veracruz), and the general Mexico visitor who just wants excellent weather and accessible colonial cities (Guanajuato, Oaxaca, CDMX).

Pick your anchor and build around it. February rewards specificity.
