Food & Drink

Mexico has one of the world’s most celebrated food cultures — and its most affordable version (street food) is often its best.

ItemCost
Tacos al pastor (2 tacos)€1–1.50
Comida corrida / menú del día (set lunch)€3–7
Torta (sandwich)€2–4
Restaurant main course (mid-range)€8–18

Beer (bottle)€1.50–3
Mezcal (single shot, mezcalería)€4–12
Coffee€1.50–4
Agua fresca (fresh fruit drink)€0.80–2

The food rule: Eat at markets and street stalls. Mercado de la Merced (CDMX), Mercado 20 de Noviembre (Oaxaca), Mercado San Juan (CDMX) — some of the best and cheapest meals in the country come from these places.

Comida corrida (set lunch at local restaurants) is Mexico’s best budget travel strategy: typically €3–7 for soup, main course, and drink. Eaten at midday by virtually everyone.

Money Tips

Cash is essential: Many street food stalls, markets, and smaller restaurants don’t accept cards. Withdraw pesos from ATMs at banks (Banamex, BBVA) inside the bank, not standalone machines. Use Charles Schwab or Revolut to avoid ATM fees.

Tipping: 10–15% at restaurants (not automatic in Mexico — tip in cash if possible, as it goes directly to the server). No tip expected at street stalls.

Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN). €1 ≈ MXN 20. Don’t exchange at the airport — rates are poor. Use ATMs or bank exchanges.

Bargaining: Appropriate at craft markets (tianguis, mercados de artesanías) but not in regular shops or restaurants.
