USA in May: National Parks Before the Rush, Memorial Day, and the Last Pre-Summer Window

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

May is the USA traveler’s last window before summer pricing and summer crowds fully arrive. Memorial Day weekend (the last weekend in May) is the traditional American summer opener — beach destinations fill, prices jump, and the country shifts into summer mode. The three weeks before Memorial Day are among the best visiting conditions of the year for national parks, cities, and outdoor destinations across the country. May also delivers the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival — one of the great American music events.

Weather in May

New York City: 13°C to 22°C. Spring fully established — Central Park in bloom, rooftops and outdoor venues opening.

New Orleans: 22°C to 30°C. Warm, humid — Jazz Fest weather. Rain possible but typically afternoon showers rather than all-day events.

Washington D.C.: 14°C to 23°C. Post-cherry blossom spring — the city’s parks and monuments in full green.

Pacific Northwest: 13°C to 19°C. The driest months of the year begin — the Pacific Northwest dry season runs May-September, and May is when the famously rainy Portland and Seattle shift to sun.

Colorado / Utah: 12°C to 22°C. National park prime season — Zion, Bryce, Arches at peak visiting conditions before June-July heat.

Hawaii: 24°C to 29°C. Excellent — the shoulder season between the winter whale watching peak and the summer family travel surge.

Florida: 24°C to 32°C. Getting hot and humid — summer is arriving in Florida ahead of schedule.

New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival

Jazz Fest (New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival) runs the last weekend of April and the first weekend of May — one of the two defining American music festivals (alongside Coachella):

What it is: Two weekends of music across 12 stages at the New Orleans Fair Grounds Race Course — jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, Cajun, zydeco, and rock. International headliners (past years: Rolling Stones, U2, Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen) alongside Louisiana legends (Irma Thomas, the Neville Brothers, Trombone Shorty).

The food: Jazz Fest’s food is as important as the music — 70+ Louisiana food vendors inside the festival grounds. Crawfish Monica (the festival’s signature dish — pasta with crawfish and cream), cochon de lait po’boy, Camellia Red Beans and Rice, and the festival’s legendary strawberry lemonade.

Day logistics: Gates open at 11 AM, music ends at 7 PM. The fairgrounds are outdoors — bring sunscreen and comfortable shoes. The lineup runs simultaneously across 12 stages; plan your schedule in advance.

Beyond the festival: The evening after Jazz Fest days, the music continues across the city — Frenchmen Street, the French Quarter, and Uptown bars with festival performers doing late-night sets. The full music experience extends far beyond the fairgrounds.

Tickets and accommodation: Book Jazz Fest accommodation 6–8 months ahead. Weekend passes sell fast; single-day tickets typically available closer to the event.

National Parks in May

May is the peak pre-crowd month for national parks:

Zion National Park: The canyon in full spring — the Narrows accessible without winter water levels, the Angels Landing hike (chains permit required) in ideal temperatures. May weekends are busy; weekdays are excellent.

Yosemite National Park: May is the waterfall peak — Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Fall, and Nevada Fall at maximum flow from Sierra Nevada snowmelt. The Valley in May before June traffic requires reservation system implementation.

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming: The Tetons in May — the elk calving season (the National Elk Refuge adjacent to Jackson Hole has the largest elk herd in the USA), some high trails still snow-covered. Snake River float trips beginning.

Olympic National Park, Washington: The Olympic Peninsula’s temperate rainforest — the Hoh Rainforest with its Hall of Mosses, the Hurricane Ridge alpine meadows, and the coast. May is the start of the dry season on the peninsula.

Acadia National Park, Maine: The Maine coast at its most beautiful — the summit of Cadillac Mountain (the first place in the USA to see sunrise from October–March), Jordan Pond, and the carriage roads in spring. May before the July-August peak.

Pacific Coast Highway — California

May is the optimal time for a Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) drive:

LA to San Francisco: The classic coastal drive — 550 miles on CA-1. Key stops: Malibu and Point Dume (north of LA), Santa Barbara (wine country 90 minutes north), Big Sur (the most dramatic coastal scenery), Hearst Castle (San Simeon), Carmel-by-the-Sea, 17-Mile Drive (Pebble Beach golf links), Monterey (aquarium, Cannery Row).

Big Sur in May: The coastal cliffs and redwood forests in May before summer fog — the Bixby Creek Bridge (the most photographed bridge in California), McWay Falls (a waterfall falling directly onto the beach), and the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park campgrounds.

Highway 1 road conditions: Check Caltrans (dot.ca.gov) before departure — sections of Highway 1 through Big Sur close periodically due to landslides. May conditions are typically stable.

Memorial Day Weekend — Beach Season Launch

Memorial Day weekend (the Friday-Monday of the last weekend in May) is the traditional American summer opener:

Beach destinations at Memorial Day:

  • Cape Cod, Massachusetts: The first beach weekend of the year — the Cape’s beaches, the Provincetown arts community, and the Vineyard ferry season opening
  • Jersey Shore: The boardwalk towns (Asbury Park, Spring Lake, Ocean City) opening for summer season
  • Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: The Southeast’s most popular beach destination — Memorial Day is the informal season opener
  • Gulf Coast: Pensacola, Destin, and the Florida Panhandle white-sand beaches launching summer season

Practical: Memorial Day weekend is one of the most-traveled domestic weekends of the year. Accommodation prices on beach destinations jump 50–100% for the holiday weekend; book 2–3 months ahead.

May is moderate pricing until Memorial Day weekend — the holiday weekend sees the first significant summer price jump. Pre-Memorial Day May is the last month of spring value at most destinations.

Practical Notes

  • Memorial Day booking: If traveling Memorial Day weekend, book accommodation by February-March. The popular coastal and outdoor destinations fill completely.
  • Jazz Fest daily lineup: The full lineup is released in February — plan which days to attend based on your preferred headliners. Weekend 1 and Weekend 2 have different lineups.
  • Yosemite day-use reservations: Check whether the Yosemite Valley day-use reservation system is implemented in May for your travel year — it has been expanded and contracted in recent years.

The Short Version

May is the pre-summer sweet spot — national parks before July crowds, Jazz Fest delivering one of America’s great music experiences, the Pacific Coast Highway in ideal driving conditions, and the last weeks of spring pricing before Memorial Day weekend launches the summer economy. The three weeks between Jazz Fest and Memorial Day represent the best-value, best-conditions window for outdoor and city travel across the continental USA. Plan around Memorial Day weekend deliberately — either time your trip to avoid it, or book the beach destination months ahead.
