USA in November: Thanksgiving, NYC Before Christmas, and the Off-Season Opportunity
Plan your trip
November is the USA’s transitional month — the fall foliage gone, the Christmas season not yet fully launched, and Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday of November) defining the cultural rhythm of the month. For international visitors, November offers the best domestic travel value of the year outside the Thanksgiving window itself — airfares and hotels are at minimums, national parks are nearly empty, and cities like New York and Chicago begin their Christmas transformations in the final week of the month. Thanksgiving week is the single most-traveled domestic holiday period; the surrounding weeks are remarkably quiet.
Weather in November
New York City: 6°C to 14°C. Autumn transitioning to winter. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on the fourth Thursday — one of the most famous parades in the world.
New England: 2°C to 10°C. Post-foliage bare trees and first frosts. Ski season beginning at the higher Vermont and New Hampshire mountains.
Chicago: 3°C to 10°C. Cold, windy — Chicago earns its Windy City reputation in November. But the architecture, museums, and restaurant scene are at their most accessible.
Southeast (Atlanta, Nashville, Charleston): 10°C to 19°C. Mild autumn — the best late-travel month in the South before any risk of northern-style cold.
Texas: 12°C to 22°C. Excellent — the Hill Country in warm November sun.
Southwest: 12°C to 22°C. Ideal hiking temperatures return to the desert parks — Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Big Bend.
Florida: 20°C to 28°C. The winter season beginning — Florida’s best weather arrives in November as the hurricane season ends and the summer humidity departs.
Hawaii: 23°C to 28°C. The North Shore big wave season begins — Eddie Aikau Invitational window opens (Waimea Bay, O’ahu).
Thanksgiving — America’s Holiday
Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November) is the most traveled domestic holiday in the USA — 50+ million Americans traveling over the Wednesday-Sunday window:
What it is: The traditional harvest festival, rooted in the Pilgrim and Wampanoag feast of 1621 — now a secular family gathering holiday centered on turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and pie (pumpkin, pecan, apple).
For travelers:
- Avoid travel on the Wednesday before and Sunday after Thanksgiving — the heaviest domestic travel days of the year. Airports and highways at maximum capacity.
- Thanksgiving Day itself: Airports are relatively quiet; the airports are at their calmest on the actual Thursday.
- Thanksgiving in NYC: The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade runs from 77th Street down Central Park West to Macy’s Herald Square. The parade includes NBC-broadcast performances, enormous character balloons, and 3.5 million street-side spectators. Arrive along the route by 7 AM for a position.
The Wednesday Thanksgiving balloon inflation: The parade’s giant balloons are inflated the evening before (Wednesday) at 79th Street and Columbus Avenue — the inflation is a public event, and in many ways more enjoyable than the parade itself. No crowds, close access, extraordinary scale.
Restaurant Thanksgiving: Many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving in restaurants — reservations required months ahead at popular venues.
New York City in November
NYC at its most manageable — and beginning its Christmas transformation:
Pre-Thanksgiving NYC: October and early November are the best value weeks in NYC’s calendar. The summer crowds gone, the Christmas tourist surge not yet arrived.
Rockefeller Center tree: The Rockefeller Christmas Tree arrives in mid-November and is lit in a ceremony the Wednesday after Thanksgiving — the first official Christmas launch of the year. The ice rink opens.
The Met Gala (May) and cultural season: November is when NYC’s cultural season hits its stride — the Metropolitan Opera, Broadway shows post-Tony season, and the major museum exhibitions.
Broadway in November: The fall Broadway season is in full swing — most shows running at full capacity but before the December holiday tourist surge. The TKTS booth in Times Square sells same-day discount tickets (up to 50% off) for most shows.
NYC after Thanksgiving: The week after Thanksgiving through mid-December is Christmas NYC — the department store windows (Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman), the Rockefeller tree lit, the Bryant Park winter village, and the holiday market at Union Square. Before the December 15-January 1 peak pricing spike.
Florida in November
The Florida winter season begins:
Miami in November: The transition from hurricane season humidity to the best weather of the year. Art Basel Miami Beach runs in early December, but the preview gallery events and the art world congregation begin arriving in late November.
Florida Keys in November: The dry season begins — the Keys in November have the clearest water and the best conditions for snorkeling and diving. The Dry Tortugas (accessible by ferry from Key West) in November calm.
Everglades National Park: The dry season (November-April) is the optimal visiting season — the water levels drop, concentrating wildlife around the remaining water sources. November alligator and wading bird watching from the Anhinga Trail is extraordinary.
Hawaii North Shore — Big Wave Season
The North Shore of O’ahu transitions to the world’s premier big wave surfing destination in November:
Banzai Pipeline (Ehukai Beach): The world’s most famous surf break — the hollowing left-hander that breaks over a shallow reef. The Billabong Pipeline Masters (part of the WSL Championship Tour) runs December-January; November is the warm-up season.
Sunset Beach: The big-wave break at Sunset — the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing’s first event (Vans World Cup) runs in November at Sunset.
Watching: The North Shore beach access is public — watching from the beach or the roadside provides free access to professional surfing at the highest level. The surf community gathers at the Foodland in Haleiwa for intel on which breaks are running.
Death Valley and Joshua Tree in November
The desert parks reopen for comfortable visiting:
Death Valley National Park: November temperatures drop to ideal hiking range (15–22°C in the Valley floor). The Artists Drive loop, Zabriskie Point, and Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes accessible without July-August heat danger. Badwater Basin — the lowest point in North America at 86 meters below sea level.
Joshua Tree National Park: Cooler temperatures opening the full park for hiking and rock climbing. The Hidden Valley nature trail, the Skull Rock area, and the Arch Rock trail. Night sky photography season — Joshua Tree’s dark skies are exceptional in November.
Budget in November
| Category | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (NYC, early-mid Nov) | $110–$190/night | $240–$540/night |
| Accommodation (NYC, Thanksgiving week) | $160–$280/night | $330–$730/night |
| Accommodation (Florida) | $90–$160/night | $190–$430/night |
| Accommodation (Southwest parks) | $85–$155/night | $185–$420/night |
| Meals | $15–$36/meal | $44–$108/meal |
Strong off-season value before Thanksgiving week spike. Thanksgiving week itself sees 2–3x surcharges at popular domestic destinations.
Practical Notes
- Thanksgiving travel logistics: Book flights for Thanksgiving by September at the latest. The Tuesday before and Saturday after are the peak travel days; Thursday itself is the calmest.
- Macy’s Parade viewing: The balloon inflation on Wednesday evening at 79th and Columbus is the best alternative to the crowded Thursday parade itself.
- National parks in November: Ranger programs continue but visitor services (some lodges, some restaurants) reduce hours. Call ahead.
- Florida Hurricane Season: Officially ends November 30 — early November carries residual storm risk.
The Short Version
November USA is Thanksgiving at its core — the country’s defining family holiday, the Macy’s Parade, and the first Christmas lights of the season. For international visitors, November is the best value month of the year outside the Thanksgiving window itself — cities and national parks at near-minimum prices and minimum crowds. Florida and the Southwest deliver their best weather as the country cools. And NYC between mid-November and mid-December, with its Christmas transformation underway and pre-surge pricing still in place, is among the most rewarding urban experiences the USA offers.
