Greenland Travel Budget: How Much Does a Trip to Greenland Cost?

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

Greenland is one of the most expensive destinations on earth. There are no roads between settlements — everything moves by plane or boat, all goods are imported, and the logistics of running a functioning society in the Arctic are reflected directly in prices. Budget accordingly and don’t expect bargains.

The Numbers at a Glance

Budget LevelDaily Cost (per person)What You Get
Budget€150–200/dayHostel/guesthouse, self-catering some meals, basic activities
Mid-range€250–400/dayHotel, restaurant meals, one guided activity per day
High-end€500–1,000+/dayTop hotels, daily guided tours, dog sled expeditions

A 7-day trip to Greenland typically costs €2,500–5,000 per person including flights from Europe. Two weeks: €5,000–10,000+.

Flights

From Copenhagen (CPH) to Nuuk (GOH) or Ilulissat (JAV):

  • Low season: €500–800 return
  • High season (summer/dog sled): €700–1,200 return
  • Book with Air Greenland — the only carrier on most routes

Domestic flights (Nuuk → Ilulissat, etc.):

  • €100–250 one-way per leg
  • Essential for any multi-destination trip — Greenland has no roads between towns

Budget tip: Flying into Ilulissat directly from Copenhagen (seasonal route) can save an expensive domestic leg.

Accommodation

TypePrice per Night
Hostel dorm (few exist)€60–90
Guesthouse / B&B€100–180
Mid-range hotel€180–280
Top hotel (Hans Egede, Icefiord Hotel)€280–500+
Remote lodge / wilderness camp€200–600 (often all-inclusive)

Note: Ilulissat commands a premium over Nuuk due to tourist demand. Book everything well in advance — accommodation is limited across all of Greenland.

Food & Drink

Greenland imports nearly all food. Prices reflect this.

ItemCost
Coffee€4–6
Lunch at a café€18–30
Dinner at a restaurant (main course)€30–60
Dinner at a top restaurant (Café Ulo, etc.)€60–100+
Beer€8–12
Supermarket meal (self-catering)€15–25/day

Greenlandic specialties worth the price: Musk ox, Arctic char, reindeer, mattak (narwhal skin — usually offered for cultural experience rather than purchased). Local catches are often the best value at restaurants.

Self-catering: Nuuk and Ilulissat have supermarkets (Brugseni). Buying groceries significantly reduces food costs but selection is limited and prices are still high by global standards.

Activities

ActivityCost (per person)
Fjord boat tour (3–4 hours)€80–150
Full-day iceberg boat tour€150–300
Ice sheet guided hike (day)€100–200
Dog sled half-day€150–250
Dog sled multi-day expedition (3–5 days)€800–2,000+
Northern lights boat tour€80–150
Whale watching tour€100–180
Disko Island boat (return)€80–140
Kayaking (half-day)€80–130

Greenland National Museum (Nuuk): €15 — extraordinary value for what it contains.

Free activities: Hiking the trails above Nuuk, walking the Ilulissat icefjord boardwalk, walking the Old Town, watching icebergs from shore.

Money-Saving Tips

Book far in advance: Accommodation and flights go up significantly closer to the date. Book 3–6 months ahead for summer, 2–4 months for winter.

Travel shoulder season: June (before peak July) and August (after peak July) offer the same midnight sun experience with slightly lower pressure on accommodation.

Walk the icefjord yourself: The Ilulissat icefjord boardwalk is free and gives extraordinary views without a boat tour. Add one boat tour for the scale perspective, but you don’t need three.

Self-cater breakfasts: Hotel breakfasts in Greenland are expensive. Supermarket breakfast (bread, cheese, cold cuts) saves €15–25/day.

Group tours: Solo travellers pay the same rate as couples for many tours. Joining group departures (available from most operators) is significantly cheaper than private charters.

Pack your own snacks: Trail food (nuts, dried fruit, energy bars) is extremely expensive in Greenland. Bring from home or Copenhagen.

Currency & Payments

Currency: Danish Krone (DKK). €1 ≈ DKK 7.5.
Cards: Accepted almost everywhere in Nuuk and Ilulissat. Smaller guesthouses may prefer cash — confirm in advance.
ATMs: Available in Nuuk and Ilulissat. Carry some cash as backup.
Tipping: Not customary in Greenland (Danish service culture).
