Best Time to Visit India: Month-by-Month Guide
Plan your trip
India is a subcontinent with wildly different climates operating simultaneously. When the north is in pleasant winter (November–February), the south is warm. When Rajasthan hits 48°C in May, the Himalayas are perfect for trekking. Understanding regional climate is essential for planning.
The Short Answer
Best for Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur): October–March
Best for Kerala: October–February (avoid June–September monsoon)
Best for Rajasthan: November–February
Best for Himachal Pradesh / Himalayas: April–June and September–October
Best for Goa: November–March
Avoid everywhere: May–June (extreme heat) and July–September (peak monsoon in most regions)
The Indian Seasons
India broadly has four seasons:
Winter (November–February) ⭐ Best overall
The best time to visit most of northern and central India. Temperatures are comfortable — Delhi ranges from 5–22°C, Rajasthan 10–25°C, Agra similar. The Taj Mahal in winter morning mist is one of India’s most beautiful sights.
Exceptions: The Himalayas are cold and many passes close. Northeast India (Assam, Meghalaya) is dry and excellent. Kerala is warm (28–32°C) and post-monsoon green.
Summer (March–June) — Mostly Avoid
Heat builds through March, becomes extreme in April–May. Delhi, Rajasthan, and central India routinely hit 42–48°C. Uncomfortable and potentially dangerous for outdoor sightseeing.
Exceptions: Ladakh and Spiti Valley open up in May–June as their high mountain passes clear. Himachal Pradesh (Manali, Dharamshala) is excellent March–June. Darjeeling is beautiful.
Monsoon (July–September)
The southwest monsoon sweeps from Kerala up through India from June–September. Heavy rainfall, flooding in some regions, and dramatic landscapes. Most of Rajasthan, Delhi, and the north gets its monsoon in July–August.
Exceptions: The rain creates extraordinary beauty in Kerala, Coorg, and the Western Ghats. The monsoon is important to India culturally and agriculturally — some travellers love it. Budget accommodation is at its cheapest.
Avoid: The northeast monsoon hits Odisha and Tamil Nadu later (October–December).
Post-Monsoon (September–October)
India reawakens in September–October. The landscape is freshly green, rivers full, and temperatures falling. A wonderful transition period — excellent for Kerala, Rajasthan, and central India.
Month-by-Month
January ⭐
Peak season across North India. Comfortable in Delhi (8–20°C), chilly at night in Rajasthan. Clear skies after the winter fog of late December. Jaipur Literature Festival. Republic Day parade in Delhi (26 Jan).
February ⭐
Excellent conditions continue. Holi (the festival of colours) falls in late February or early March — one of India’s most joyful celebrations. Rajasthan Music Festival.
March
Comfortable in March. Holi. Last month before the heat arrives in earnest.
April–May
Heat begins in earnest. Manageable in early April; extreme by May. Best for hill stations and Himalayan regions opening up.
June
Pre-monsoon. Very hot. Monsoon arrives in Kerala (June 1 typically) and sweeps north through June–July.
July–August
Monsoon across most of India. Dramatic, beautiful (if you don’t mind rain), and cheap. Roads in rural areas can flood. Many tourist facilities in North India reduce services.
September
Late monsoon. North India getting its last heavy rain. South India beautiful — lush green everywhere.
October ⭐
Post-monsoon freshness. Temperatures dropping. Navratri and Dussehra festivals (September–October). One of the best months for Rajasthan and Delhi.
November ⭐⭐ Best month overall
The sweet spot: cool, clear, post-monsoon green but drying out. Diwali (the festival of lights) is in October or November — extraordinary across India, particularly in Jaipur and Varanasi. Best month for the Golden Triangle.
December
Cool in the north (Delhi fog can be heavy in late December). Christmas celebrations in Goa and Kerala (large Christian communities). Good for South India and beaches.
