Kazakhstan in June: Peak Hiking Season, High Passes Open, and Long Steppe Days

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

June is Kazakhstan’s summer prime for mountain travelers. The high Tian Shan passes above 3,000m open as snow melts. Alpine meadows bloom with wildflowers. The days are long (17+ hours of daylight at this latitude). And the steppe, before the July heat dries it out, is still green enough for horseback riding and camping. June is when Kazakhstan delivers its mountain and steppe promise.

Weather & Conditions

Almaty: 18–28°C. Warm. Some afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains.

Tian Shan (high routes, 3,000m+): 5–15°C. High passes opening. Snow at summits.

Astana: 14–25°C. The steppe capital is genuinely pleasant in June.

Steppe: 18–28°C. Long grass still green in early June, beginning to brown by late June.

Charyn Canyon: 22–32°C. Getting warm. Morning visits recommended.

What to Do

Tian Shan high route trekking: June opens the high elevation trails above 3,000m. The South Inylchek base camp route (approaching Khan Tengri, 7,010m — one of the most beautiful peaks in the world), the Turgen Valley, and the Ala-Kul Lake route (above the Kolsai Lakes) are all accessible by June. Serious multi-day trekking requires a Kazakh guide company.

Khan Tengri base camp approach: The magnificent pointed ice peak of Khan Tengri (the highest point in Kazakhstan at 7,010m, on the China-Kyrgyzstan-Kazakhstan border) is approached from Almaty via helicopter to base camp or by multi-day trek from the Inylchek Glacier. Summer mountaineering season begins in June.

Horseback riding, Qarkara Valley: The wide Qarkara Valley (accessible from Almaty via the Almaty-Bishkek road) is Kazakh nomadic heartland. Horseback riding with local Kazakh families in the summer jailau (high pasture) is possible through organized cultural tour operators. June’s green grass and blooming steppe make the landscapes extraordinary.

Aktau and the Caspian: Kazakhstan’s Caspian coast at Aktau is warm and accessible in June (25–30°C). The Mangystau region — extraordinary lunar landscape, underground mosques, necropolis fields, and chalk plateau formations — is accessible from Aktau.

Altyn-Emel National Park: The national park east of Almaty has the Singing Dunes (sand dunes that emit an audible sound in certain wind conditions), the Ak-Baur sacred site, and spectacular canyon landscapes. June before the full summer heat is the right month.

Festivals & Events

Kurban Ait (Eid al-Adha, if in June): Variable by Islamic calendar. When it falls in summer, the Kazakh Muslim community observes with prayer and animal sacrifice.

Akyn (oral poetry competition, variable summer months): Traditional Kazakh akyns (oral poets) compete in improvised poetry-singing competitions called aitys. Cultural events across the country.

Practical Tips

High altitude trekking: above 3,500m in the Tian Shan requires proper acclimatization. Altitude sickness management is essential for approaches to base camps.

Permit requirements: certain areas near the China and Kyrgyzstan borders require border zone permits, obtained in advance through your tour operator.

June is the start of the domestic Kazakh summer travel season. Mountain huts and guesthouses near Almaty fill on weekends. Book midweek or in advance.

Who June Is For

Serious hikers and trekkers who want the high Tian Shan routes in prime condition. Horseback riding and nomadic culture travelers. Altyn-Emel visitors. And anyone combining Almaty’s city culture with mountain adventures in ideal June conditions.
