Kazakhstan in August: Tian Shan at Peak, Apple Country Awakening, and the Independence Countdown
Plan your trip
August is the last full month of Kazakhstan’s summer. The Tian Shan mountain routes are operating at peak capacity — all huts staffed, all trails open, and the alpine meadows still in bloom before the first September frosts arrive at elevation. In Almaty, the apple orchards in the surrounding valleys are beginning their harvest — the city’s name derives from the Kazakh for “father of apples,” and August is when that etymology starts to mean something tangible. The steppe is hot and golden. And Independence Day on August 30 (Constitution Day) begins the national holiday sequence that continues into September.
Weather & Conditions
Almaty: 20–32°C. Still summer. The orchards in the Ile-Alatau foothills are warm and productive.
Tian Shan (high routes): 8–18°C. Excellent trekking conditions. Snow possible above 3,500m at night.
Astana: 18–28°C. Warm steppe summer, cooling toward September.
Charyn Canyon: 24–34°C. Still hot. Morning visits essential.
Steppe: 18–30°C. Gold and expansive. The brown steppe in August has a particular austere beauty.
What to Do
Tian Shan trekking — the peak window: August is the finest trekking month in the Tian Shan. The Trans-Ili Alatau range above Almaty — accessible via Medeu and Shymbulak — offers routes ranging from day hikes to multi-day backcountry circuits. The Big Almaty Lake (Bolshoe Almatinskoye Ozero) sits at 2,511m in a glacial valley with extraordinary color in August light. The Turgen Gorge east of Almaty has seven waterfalls accessible on a day excursion. Operators like Kan Tengri and Dostyk Tour run guided August expeditions to the high peaks.
Apple orchards, Ile-Alatau foothills: The Aport apple — a large, sweet variety unique to the Almaty region — begins its harvest in August. The orchards in the villages of the Ile-Alatau foothills (Kaskelen, Talgar, Esik) open for visits. The Almaty Green Bazaar’s apple selection in August is extraordinary — dozens of varieties at their peak. This is the single most distinctive local food experience in Kazakhstan.
Altyn-Emel National Park: August is still hot, but the Singing Dunes and the Ili River valley in Altyn-Emel are extraordinary in early morning conditions. The 150m Singing Dune produces its resonance phenomenon year-round. The Ili River itself, running through the park, has calm conditions for water-based exploration. The park’s saxaul forest (a desert tree adapted to the steppe) is unique in Central Asia.
Khan Tengri Base Camp expeditions: Khan Tengri (7,010m) is the highest point entirely within Kazakhstan and one of the classic Central Asian peaks. August is the summit season — base camp at Inylchek Glacier is accessible by helicopter from Karkara. Even non-climbers can visit base camp by helicopter for a Central Asian high-altitude experience unlike anywhere else.
Kolsai Lakes, Charyn Canyon combination: The Kolsai Lakes — three glacial lakes at 1,800–2,800m in the Tian Shan — are excellent in August. The lower lake is accessible by road; the upper two require 3–4 hours of hiking. Combined with Charyn Canyon (morning only), this makes a two-day excursion from Almaty covering Kazakhstan’s two most iconic natural formations.
Festivals & Events
Kazakhstan Constitution Day (August 30): A national public holiday. Not as large as Independence Day (December 16) but marks the beginning of the autumn holiday sequence.
Summer jailau culture (ongoing through August): The nomadic high-pasture lifestyle continues through August. The Qarkara Valley and Jungar Alatau yurt camps are still operational. August is the last month for this experience before families descend to lower pastures in September.
Practical Tips
Tian Shan August: the weather window is reliable but afternoon thunderstorms are common above 2,500m. Start high-route treks early (before 8am) to be below exposed ridges by early afternoon.
Khan Tengri helicopter access: weather-dependent and expensive. Book through Almaty operators (Kan Tengri has the most established base camp operation). Confirm availability 4–6 weeks ahead — helicopter slots in August book quickly.
Apple orchards: the Talgar market (25km from Almaty) is the best commercial apple market in the region. August weekends draw Almaty residents in force — visit weekdays for a less crowded experience.
Altyn-Emel August: the park entrance requires a permit obtainable from Almaty or at the park gate. The 300km drive from Almaty on partially unpaved roads requires a vehicle with clearance.
Who August Is For
High-route trekkers completing the Tian Shan season. Apricot and apple-country food travelers. Khan Tengri expedition participants and base camp visitors. Charyn-Kolsai nature circuit travelers. And anyone who wants the full Kazakhstan summer before the September cooling begins.
