Kazakhstan in March: Nauryz Approaches, Winter Breaks, and the Steppe Begins to Thaw

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

March is when Kazakhstan’s long winter begins its retreat. Temperatures in Almaty move above 0°C for the first time in months. The Tian Shan snow remains but the city streets clear. And most significantly, Nauryz approaches — the Persian/Central Asian New Year on March 22, which is Kazakhstan’s most joyful national celebration. March is preparation and anticipation.

Weather & Conditions

Almaty: -2 to 8°C. Warming noticeably. Snow in the city melts and refreezes through the month.

Astana: -15 to -5°C. Still cold but the worst is past. March is the first month of incremental warming.

Shymbulak: -10 to 0°C. Late ski season. Snow quality decreasing but runs still operational.

Steppe: Snow melting on the southern edges. The central and northern steppe remains frozen.

What to Do

Nauryz preparations (culminates March 22): The most important event in Kazakhstan’s cultural calendar. Nauryz meiramy — New Year — is celebrated on the spring equinox. Cities set up yurt villages (large traditional felt tents), traditional food stalls, music performances, horse racing preparations, and cultural exhibitions. The week leading up to March 22 sees elaborate preparations. On the day itself, cities fill with celebrants in traditional dress.

Nauryz celebrations, Almaty and Astana: March 22 is Kazakhstan’s greatest cultural celebration — streets fill with aul (village/community) celebrations, the traditional Nauryz kozhe (ritual spring soup of 7 ingredients including millet, wheat, and dried meat) is shared communally, and horse games (kokpar, baige) are performed. The Almaty celebrations are the most elaborate.

Late ski season at Shymbulak: March conditions at Shymbulak are variable — spring skiing (wet and slushy lower down, still powder at altitude) is available in early March. By late March, the resort is typically closed.

Green Bazaar, Almaty: The central market of Almaty is excellent year-round but March brings the first spring produce. Dried fruits, nuts, and the preparations for Nauryz food are visible in the stalls.

Charyn Canyon (pre-season visit): The extraordinary canyon 195km east of Almaty — often compared to a small-scale Grand Canyon — is accessible in March before the tourist season. Cold but dramatic, the red sandstone formations and the Ash Grove (a relic ash tree forest from the Tertiary period) are accessible.

Festivals & Events

Nauryz Meiramy (March 22): Kazakhstan’s most important national celebration. Three-day public holiday.

International Women’s Day (March 8): A major holiday in Kazakhstan (Soviet tradition). Flowers are sold everywhere; restaurants and events celebrate.

Practical Tips

Nauryz travel: accommodation in Almaty and Astana for March 21–23 books ahead. The celebrations are free and public; participation is welcomed for visitors.

March driving: mountain roads (including the road to Charyn Canyon) may still be snow-covered or icy in early March. Check conditions before driving.

The transition from winter to spring in Kazakhstan can be abrupt or drawn out — the country’s continental climate produces dramatic swings. A warm March day (10°C) can be followed by a March blizzard. Pack for both.

Who March Is For

Nauryz cultural travelers — this is the definitive Kazakhstan cultural experience, genuinely joyful and specifically Central Asian. Travelers arriving early for spring to avoid summer crowds and heat. And the cultural curious who want to witness a 3,000-year-old spring celebration still observed with genuine community engagement.
