Kazakhstan in May: Hiking Season Opens, Apple Orchards Bloom, and Ideal Temperatures
Plan your trip
May is Kazakhstan’s finest month for travel. Temperatures across the south are warm but not hot. The Tian Shan National Park above Almaty opens its hiking season. The steppe is still green from spring rains. And the city of Almaty — surrounded by mountains and famous for its apple orchards (the city’s name derives from alma, apple) — is in full spring bloom. May is when Kazakhstan becomes a genuinely welcoming destination.
Weather & Conditions
Almaty: 14–24°C. Ideal. Warm enough for outdoor dining, cool enough for hiking. Some afternoon rain.
Tian Shan foothills (above Almaty): 8–18°C. Hiking season opening at lower and mid-elevations.
Astana: 8–18°C. Finally comfortable. Spring arrives in the north.
Charyn Canyon: 16–26°C. Still comfortable before summer heat arrives.
Steppe: 12–22°C. Green but beginning to dry out.
What to Do
Tian Shan National Park hiking: The mountains above Almaty — reaching 4,973m at Talgar Peak — begin opening their hiking routes in May. The Big Almaty Lake route (12km round trip to a spectacular mountain lake) is fully accessible. The Butakov Waterfall trail is a classic beginner route. The Medeo-Shymbulak gondola provides quick access to mid-elevation starting points.
Three Lakes trek (Kolsai Lakes): Three spectacularly blue mountain lakes at 1,818m, 2,252m, and 2,850m in the Tian Shan foothills 280km from Almaty. The connecting trail between the lower two lakes (12km) is excellent in May. Kazakhstan’s most beautiful hiking destination.
Almaty’s apple culture: The city that gave the world’s domestic apple its name (Malus sieversii, the wild ancestor, still grows in the forests above the city) has apple trees lining every boulevard. May brings the last of the blossom and the beginning of the leaves. The Central Botanical Garden has a specific collection of Kazakh apple varieties.
Astana city exploration: May’s warm temperatures make Astana’s outdoor architectural spectacle accessible. The Nurzhol Boulevard esplanade connecting the river to the presidential complex, the Bayterek Tower, and the futuristic National Museum of Kazakhstan are all worth exploring. Victory Day (May 9) brings parades and ceremonies.
Turgen Gorge waterfalls: The Turgen Gorge east of Almaty has a series of waterfalls (7 Waterfalls Trail) that are at their best in May as snowmelt maximizes flow. An easy half-day excursion from the city.
Festivals & Events
Victory Day (May 9): A major public holiday in Kazakhstan, deeply observed with parades, veteran events, and national commemoration. Astana and Almaty run major ceremonies.
Day of the Republic (May 5): Kazakhstan state holiday.
Practical Tips
May is the beginning of the outdoor tourism season in Kazakhstan. Hotel prices are lower than summer but rising. Almaty’s mountain hiking infrastructure (local guides, transport to trailheads) is coming online but not yet at summer capacity.
The Kolsai Lakes require a 4WD vehicle or organized transport from Almaty — no public bus to the lakes. Almaty tour operators run day and overnight trips.
May weather in the mountains is unpredictable — afternoon thunderstorms are possible. Always carry rain gear for mountain hikes.
Who May Is For
The single best recommendation for Kazakhstan first-time visitors. May combines ideal temperatures, fully operational outdoor activities, and pre-summer pricing. Hikers, nature travelers, apple-culture enthusiasts, and anyone who wants Central Asia’s most unexpected destination in its finest weather window.
