South Korea in April: Cherry Blossoms, Jinhae Festival, and Seoul at Its Best
Plan your trip
April is South Korea’s showstopper month. Cherry blossoms peak across the country, temperatures turn ideal for walking, and the country puts on its most photogenic display of the year. Unlike Japan’s spring, Korea’s blossom season is slightly less crowded internationally — and the domestic festival scene is excellent.
Weather in April
Seoul: 12–18°C average, warming through the month. Light jacket weather. Comfortable for long walking days.
Busan / Jinhae: Similar, possibly a degree warmer with sea influence. April 1–15 is usually peak for Jinhae’s famous festival.
Jeju: 14–19°C. Full spring warmth. The cherry blossoms are finishing but the yellow canola fields are in bloom in April.
Jinhae Gunhangje (Cherry Blossom Festival)
The Jinhae Gunhangje Festival near Busan is one of the largest cherry blossom events in Asia. The city of Jinhae (now a district of Changwon) plants 360,000 cherry trees, and during the festival (typically April 1–10), over one million visitors arrive.
What makes Jinhae different:
- The famous Yeojwacheon Stream, lined on both sides with cherry trees and crossed by a walking bridge — one of the most-photographed scenes in Korea
- The railway tracks through Gyeonghwa Station surrounded by cherry trees (arrive very early or very late for manageable crowds)
- Free entry throughout the festival area
- Accessible from Busan by 1 hour train
Practical: Go on a weekday if at all possible. The festival draws enormous weekend crowds — arrive by 8am, walk toward Yeojwacheon first, then the side streets.
Seoul Cherry Blossoms in April
Yeouido Hangang Park: Seoul’s most famous cherry blossom spot — a row of trees along the river in the Yeouido finance district. The annual Seoul Yeongdeungpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festival takes place here. Pack a picnic blanket, buy fried chicken, sit under the trees.
Namsan Mountain: The slopes below N Seoul Tower have cherry trees and city views. Walking up from Myeongdong in April with blossoms overhead is one of Seoul’s best spring walks.
Seokchon Lake Park (Lotte World area): Two lakes surrounded by cherry trees in the Songpa district of eastern Seoul. Very popular, very photogenic — go on a weekday or early morning.
Gyeongbokgung Palace: The largest Joseon-era palace in Seoul has cherry trees along its outer walls and in the gardens. Guards in traditional costume + cherry blossoms = one of the more distinctly Korean scenes you’ll find.
Gyeongju in April: The Best Single Day Trip
Gyeongju is Korea’s ancient capital — a city where royal burial tumuli rise from the ground between apartment buildings, where Buddhist temples are carved into mountains, and where Silla Kingdom history is everywhere underfoot.
In April:
- Tumuli Park (royal burial mounds covered in grass) surrounded by cherry trees → extraordinary
- Bulguksa Temple (UNESCO World Heritage) with spring flowers
- Anapji Pond (Donggung Palace) reflecting trees in clear water
- Cheomseongdae Observatory (7th century, one of the oldest astronomical observatories in Asia) surrounded by canola flowers in early April
Gyeongju is 2.5 hours from Seoul by KTX. Best as an overnight — stay at a hanok guesthouse in the old town area.
Crowds and Practical Notes
April is Korea’s busiest tourist month. Weekend crowds at major sites are significant.
Jinhae festival: Weekday mandatory for reasonable experience. Saturday–Sunday are overwhelming.
Seoul palaces: Most beautiful before 9am. The guided tours in English start at 10am — arrive before the groups.
Accommodation: Book Seoul and Busan/Jinhae 6–8 weeks ahead for early April. Last-minute availability tightens fast.
Budget in April
| Category | Cost |
|---|---|
| Budget accommodation | $30–55/night |
| Mid-range hotel (Seoul) | $75–140/night |
| KBBQ dinner (per person) | $25–50 |
| Jinhae accommodation (festival week) | +20–30% premium |
| 10-day trip budget | $1,400–2,400 |
The Verdict
April is the undisputed peak of Korean travel. If you can go, go. The formula: arrive in Seoul for the first 3 days (palaces, Yeouido river), day trip to Gyeongju, overnight in Busan, day trip to Jinhae festival on a weekday, back to Seoul.
It’s achievable in 8–10 days and delivers everything Korea’s spring reputation promises.
