South Korea in March: Cherry Blossoms Starting, Crowds Not Yet

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

March is Korea’s pre-season — the month before the crowds. Cherry blossoms haven’t peaked on the mainland yet. Spring break hasn’t hit. And yet the country is already thawing into something genuinely pleasant.

Weather in March

Seoul: Cold early, warming mid-month. Temperatures go from 3–8°C in early March to 10–15°C by late month. Winter coat still needed for the first two weeks, light jacket by the end.

Busan: Warmer than Seoul by 2–3 degrees — a meaningful difference in early March. Sea air moderates the cold.

Jeju Island: Mild in March (10–15°C). First cherry blossoms in Korea appear here, typically mid-to-late March — 2 weeks ahead of Seoul.

Cherry Blossoms in March

The Korean cherry blossom season follows the same north-south gradient as Japan’s, but on a smaller and more compressed geographic scale.

LocationTypical First BloomPeak
Jeju (Seogwipo)Mid MarchLate March
Busan (Jinhae)Late MarchEarly April
SeoulLate MarchEarly–mid April

Jeju in late March is the first cherry blossom experience in Korea — and the island is significantly less crowded than during peak season. The Jeju Cherry Blossom Festival (typically late March–early April at Jeju National University campus) draws attention, but the rest of the island remains quiet.

Gyeongju in late March: Korea’s ancient capital, with royal tumuli scattered across the city, begins its cherry blossom season in late March. Tumuli Park lined with blossoms and no tourist bus convoys — this window exists briefly.

What to Do in March

Seoul before the crowds:

  • Bukchon Hanok Village on a weekday morning in March has significantly fewer tour groups than any spring weekend
  • Gyeongbokgung Palace is beautiful in the last snow or early spring light
  • The Han River parks are quiet — bring a mat, buy convenience store snacks, watch the city exhale after winter

Skiing (final weeks): Major Korean ski resorts (Pyeongchang-area resorts like Alpensia, Yongpyong, High1) typically run through late March. Early March is the last reliable powder window. Not Japan-level skiing, but accessible from Seoul in 2–2.5 hours.

DMZ visit: The Demilitarized Zone visits from Seoul are year-round but crowd-free in March. The Joint Security Area (JSA) tours require advance booking.

Budget in March

Low-to-mid season pricing.

CategoryCost
Budget accommodation (Seoul)$25–45/night
Mid-range hotel$65–120/night
Meals$6–25 depending on venue
10-day trip budget$1,200–2,200

The Verdict

March is the right answer if you want cherry blossoms without April crowds. Target Jeju in the third week of March for the first blooms, then Seoul/Gyeongju in late March–early April for the main event. The weather is still cold but manageable, and the country is unambiguously itself rather than performing for tourism.
