Estadio Akron: Match Day Guide for World Cup 2026
Plan your trip
Estadio Akron — officially the Estadio Chivas Akron — opened in 2010 and is one of the most modern football stadiums in Latin America. Designed by architect Rafael de la Peña, the stadium has a translucent membrane structure that illuminates the exterior at night and creates a distinctive visual atmosphere. It is owned by Club Deportivo Guadalajara (Chivas), the club with the largest following in Mexico.
Stadium Facts
Address: Periférico Norte Manuel Gómez Morín 777, Zapopan, Jalisco
Capacity: 49,850
Opened: 2010
Home team: Chivas de Guadalajara
World Cup 2026 matches: 5 matches (group stage and round of 16)
The Stadium and the Chivas
The Chivas are the only Liga MX team with a “Mexicans only” policy — since their founding, they have signed only Mexican nationals. This makes them the most representative club of the national football identity; their exclusive-use stadium (they share with no other team) is part of that identity.
Estadio Akron was built with state-of-the-art technology — natural grass, advanced sound systems, and ETFE membrane cladding (the same technology used in Beijing’s Olympic Bird’s Nest) place it among the most technically advanced stadiums in Latin America.
Getting There
The stadium is in Zapopan, on the northern periphery of the Guadalajara metropolitan area — 20–30 minutes from the Historic Center in normal traffic.
Tren Ligero and Macrobús
Tren Ligero Line 1: The north-south line reaches El Campanario station, approximately 3 km from the stadium. From El Campanario, Uber or a complementary bus completes the journey.
Macrobús (BRT): The Macrobús corridor on Avenida Periférico Norte has stops near the stadium on event days. Check for special World Cup services announced by Guadalajara’s transit system (SITEUR).
Uber
The most direct option from the Historic Center or tourist neighborhoods:
- From Historic Center: 150–250 MXN, 25–40 minutes
- From Chapultepec/Americana: 120–200 MXN, 20–30 minutes
- Post-match: Price may rise 50–100 MXN due to demand
Driving
Access via Periférico Norte. Official stadium parking: 100–150 MXN. On match days, the Periférico can experience significant congestion — arrive 2+ hours early.
Match Day Experience
Gates open: 2 hours before kickoff.
The exterior fan zone: The stadium has a large exterior esplanade with food vendors, drinks, and merchandise on match days. Arriving 90 minutes early allows time to enjoy the pre-match atmosphere outside.
Security: Bag checks and prohibited items screening at all entrances. Containers larger than 500ml are not permitted.
Weather: The stadium roof protects most spectators from rain, which is likely in July (Guadalajara’s rainy season). Early afternoon matches can be warm — light clothing and water are advisable.
Inside the Stadium
The translucent membrane: The ETFE cladding allows sunlight in during the day and creates a lighting effect from inside at night — the stadium glows from outside like a giant lantern. For evening matches, the visual effect is extraordinary.
The stands: Four sectors. The north stand (Chivas) and south stand (visiting team) are the supporter sections. The lateral stands have the best viewing angles to the pitch.
Food: The stadium serves birria tacos, tortas, nachos, and beer. The birria tacos inside the stadium are not as good as in Tlaquepaque, but they’re appropriate for the context.
Acoustics: The Akron’s roof design concentrates sound effectively — with a full house, the crowd noise is notable.
Around the Stadium
The immediate area around the stadium in Zapopan doesn’t have the bar and restaurant density of more urban stadium locations. Pre-match options:
- Eat in Chapultepec or Tlaquepaque and go directly to the stadium
- The adjacent Andares shopping center has chain restaurant options
- The stadium esplanade has sufficient options for the pre-match period
Practical Tips
- The stadium is in Zapopan municipality, outside central Guadalajara — plan travel time carefully.
- July means rain. Bring something waterproof even though the stadium is covered, as the journey to and from the stadium may be wet.
- For visitors attending multiple matches here, transport routes are the same each time but match-day traffic varies.
