Guadalajara Transport Guide for World Cup 2026
Plan your trip
Guadalajara has a developing public transit system — the Tren Ligero (two lines) and Macrobús (rapid transit bus system) cover the main corridors, but the city was largely designed for the car. For World Cup visitors, Uber is the most practical option for reaching Estadio Akron and for journeys between neighborhoods.
Guadalajara Tren Ligero
The Tren Ligero system has two lines:
Line 1 (north-south): From Periférico Norte (Zapopan zone) to Periférico Sur (university zone). Passes through the Historic Center (Cathedral) and Mercado Libertad. The most useful line for Centro visitors.
Line 2 (east-west): From Juárez to Tetlán. Crosses the Historic Center horizontally.
Fare: 9.50 MXN. Pay with the MI card at the turnstiles (available at Tren Ligero ticket offices).
For Estadio Akron: Line 1 reaches the northern zone of Guadalajara (El Campanario station or similar), but the stadium is in Zapopan — approximately 3 km further from the nearest station. Complete the journey with Uber or a special match-day bus service.
Macrobús (BRT)
The Macrobús operates on Guadalajara’s main road corridors in BRT mode (dedicated lane, pre-board payment):
Line 1 (Periférico Norte – Periférico Sur along Calzada Independencia): The most important corridor — passes through Mercado Libertad and the Center.
Fare: 9.50 MXN (same card as Tren Ligero).
For Estadio Akron: Some Macrobús services stop near Estadio Akron on event days. Check for special World Cup service announced by Guadalajara’s transit authority (SITEUR).
Uber
Uber is widely available in Guadalajara at accessible prices:
- Historic Center to Chapultepec/Americana: 60–90 MXN
- Center to Tlaquepaque: 80–130 MXN
- Center to Estadio Akron: 120–200 MXN (without match traffic)
- Center to Tonalá: 100–160 MXN
On match days: Uber demand multiplies around the stadium before kick-off. Prices can rise 50–100% due to surge. Leaving by Uber after the match can mean a 15–30 minute wait.
Recommended alternative: For matches, take Tren Ligero + Macrobús to the northern zone and a short Uber for the last few kilometers. The return journey is easier by Tren Ligero than by post-match Uber.
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International Airport (GDL)
The airport is 17 km southeast of the Historic Center.
Official taxi (Sitio): Available at the arrivals terminal. Fixed fare to the Center: 380–450 MXN. Licensed taxis with fixed pricing — the safer option.
Uber: 180–280 MXN to the Center. Cheaper than a taxi; pick up at the designated Uber zone at the airport.
Travel time: 25–45 minutes to the Center without traffic; 40–70 minutes during peak hours.
World Cup Visitor Transport Summary
From airport to hotel: Uber or official taxi.
Moving around the city (Center / Chapultepec / Tlaquepaque): Combination of Tren Ligero and Uber. The city is more pedestrian-friendly in the Historic Center.
For Estadio Akron: Uber from the hotel, or Tren Ligero + Macrobús + short Uber. Budget the time: 30–45 minutes from the Center in normal traffic; longer on match days.
For the Tequila excursion: Bus from the Central de Autobuses or the Expreso Tequila (book in advance).
For Tlaquepaque: Uber (80–130 MXN) or bus route 275 from the Center.
Practical Notes
The MI card: Guadalajara’s integrated transit card works for Tren Ligero and Macrobús. 20 MXN for the card + desired balance. Available at station ticket offices.
Taxis: Use only licensed taxis (visible license and meter) or app-ordered cars. Unauthorized street taxis are not recommended.
Congestion: Guadalajara has significant vehicle traffic during peak hours (7–9am, 2–4pm, 6–8pm). For journeys during those hours, the Tren Ligero is more predictable than Uber.
