Monterrey Neighborhoods Guide for World Cup 2026

Monterrey is a sprawling metropolitan area of 5 million across multiple municipalities — Monterrey (the original city), San Pedro Garza García (the wealthy suburb), Guadalupe (where Estadio BBVA is located), San Nicolás de los Garza, and others. For World Cup visitors, the practical area concentrates on three zones: Centro/Barrio Antiguo, San Pedro Garza García, and Colonia Obispado.


Centro and Barrio Antiguo

The historic center of Monterrey, anchored by the Macroplaza — one of the largest urban plazas in the world at 40 hectares. The Macroplaza connects the Metropolitan Cathedral, MARCO (the contemporary art museum), the Faro del Comercio, and government buildings in a continuous pedestrian space.

Barrio Antiguo: The colonial-era neighborhood immediately south of the Macroplaza — Monterrey’s equivalent of a historic European quarter, with 18th and 19th century buildings repurposed as restaurants, bars, and galleries. The nightlife concentration of Barrio Antiguo (Cantina Catedral, La Tumba, and the bar clusters on Morelos and Padre Mier streets) makes it the default evening destination.

Who should stay here: Budget and mid-range travelers who want to walk to nightlife and cultural attractions. Hotels in the Centro are the most affordable option that still puts you near the city’s main sights.

Transit: Metro Lines 1 and 2 both run through the Centro. Uber pick-up is easy throughout.

Downside: The Centro is active until midnight but quieter by 2am. Some blocks away from the main pedestrian areas feel less vibrant during the day.


San Pedro Garza García

The municipality adjacent to Monterrey to the southwest — technically a separate city, but functionally Monterrey’s wealthy district. San Pedro has the highest concentration of upscale restaurants, luxury hotels, international brands, and corporate headquarters in northern Mexico.

Calzada del Valle: The main commercial and restaurant corridor — lined with terrace restaurants, cocktail bars, and the kind of food scene (Japanese, Italian, contemporary Mexican) that competes with the best neighborhoods in CDMX.

Accommodation: The Grand Hyatt, Marriott, and other international hotel chains cluster in San Pedro. Prices are 20–30% higher than equivalent Centro properties, but the environment is polished and the infrastructure (sidewalks, lighting, Uber availability) is excellent.

Who should stay here: Mid-range to upper-end travelers who prioritize restaurant quality and hotel comfort over proximity to cultural sights.

Distance to stadium: Uber to Estadio BBVA: 25–40 minutes, 100–160 MXN.


Colonia Obispado

The neighborhood between Centro and San Pedro, centered on the Obispado hill (El Obispado, the Bishop’s Palace museum) and running along Avenida Vasconcelos. Mid-range in price and in character — established residential blocks with a growing restaurant and bar scene that’s more neighborhood-oriented than tourist-facing.

Why consider it: Lower prices than San Pedro, better restaurant access than the Centro’s budget zone, and the Obispado viewpoint is walkable.


Valle and Cumbres

North and northwest of the Centro — residential areas popular with regio families that have expanded restaurant and shopping infrastructure in recent decades. Less useful for World Cup visitors without a car, but Uber connects these neighborhoods cheaply.


Parque Fundidora Zone

The converted steel mill park (Parque Fundidora) sits east of the Centro along the Santa Catarina River. The park itself is free and accessible, and the surrounding area has developed hotels and restaurants in recent years. Hotels here are convenient for the park but require Uber for most other destinations.
