Monterrey Transport Guide for World Cup 2026

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

Monterrey has three Metro lines, a reliable Uber network, and organized match-day transport to Estadio BBVA. The city is spread across multiple municipalities and requires a mix of Metro and Uber to navigate efficiently. Taxis from the street (sitio taxis) exist but Uber is cheaper and more convenient for visitors.

Monterrey Metro

Three lines covering the main urban corridor:

  • Line 1 (east-west): Runs from Exposición in the west to General Anaya in the east, through the Centro (Zaragoza and Cuauhtémoc stations)
  • Line 2 (north-south): Runs from Lerdo in the east through the Centro (Zaragoza station) toward the University zone
  • Line 3: The airport line — direct connection from the Centro to Monterrey International Airport (General Mariano Escobedo Airport, MTY)

Fare: 6 MXN per ride. Rechargeable card (Tarjeta Metro) available at any station: initial card cost 20 MXN, minimum top-up 20 MXN.

Hours: Approximately 6:00–23:00 Monday–Saturday; 6:00–22:00 Sunday. Extended hours on match days.

The airport connection (Line 3): Direct Metro from the Centro to MTY airport — approximately 25–30 minutes, 6 MXN. This is the cheapest and most reliable airport connection; Uber from the Centro costs 150–250 MXN.

Getting to Estadio BBVA

The stadium is in Guadalupe municipality, east of the Centro. The Metro does not reach the stadium directly.

Option 1 — Metro + Uber: Take Line 2 east to Lerdo station, then Uber to the stadium (10–15 min, 40–60 MXN). Total from Centro: ~35–40 minutes.

Option 2 — Direct Uber: From Centro to Estadio BBVA: 80–130 MXN, 20–30 minutes without traffic. After the match, surge pricing applies — budget 150–250 MXN for the return.

Option 3 — Organized shuttles: During World Cup matches, FIFA and local authorities typically organize paid shuttles from the Centro and main hotel zones. Check official FIFA 2026 transport updates closer to the event.

Option 4 — Car: Parking is available at the stadium. Arrive 90+ minutes before kickoff. Post-match exit by car takes 45–90 minutes.

Uber in Monterrey

Uber is the practical transport solution for most tourist journeys. The city is well-covered and wait times are typically 3–8 minutes in populated areas.

Key routes and approximate prices:

RouteDistanceApprox. cost
Airport (MTY) to Centro24 km150–250 MXN
Centro to San Pedro Garza García8 km60–100 MXN
Centro to Estadio BBVA12 km80–130 MXN
Centro to La Huasteca22 km120–180 MXN
Centro to Parque Fundidora3 km30–50 MXN

After major events (matches, concerts at Parque Fundidora), surge pricing is common — 1.5–2.5x standard rates.

Airport Access

Monterrey International Airport (MTY): Located 24 km northeast of the Centro in the Apodaca municipality.

Metro Line 3: The most cost-effective option — direct to the airport from downtown stations for 6 MXN. The journey takes 25–30 minutes. The Line 3 station is connected to the airport terminal by a covered walkway.

Uber: 150–250 MXN from the Centro, 30–40 minutes. No Uber surcharge for airport pick-up (unlike CDMX or Guadalajara).

Official taxi: Available at the airport exit, metered — 350–450 MXN to the Centro. No advantage over Uber on this route.

Walking and Cycling

The Centro and Barrio Antiguo are walkable in the evenings (compact streets, pedestrian zones). The Macroplaza and surrounding blocks form a walkable civic center.

Monterrey has a Ecobici-style bike share system (BiciRegio) with docking stations in the Centro and along the main avenues — 30–50 MXN/day. The Santa Catarina riverbed trail connects Centro to Parque Fundidora by bike (2 km, flat).

Outside of the Centro, distances between neighborhoods require transit or Uber — the metropolitan area is too large for practical cycling.

Practical Notes

  • Carry small bills (20 and 50 MXN) for Metro and market purchases
  • Uber app works normally; set your destination before entering the car
  • On match days at Estadio BBVA, allow extra time in both directions — road access to the stadium tightens significantly 2 hours before and 1 hour after kickoff
