Portugal in November: Atlantic Storms, New Wine Season, and Deep Off-Season Value
Plan your trip
November is Portugal’s deep off-season — the tourists have gone, the prices are near their January lows, and the country operates for itself. It is also one of the most dramatic months on the Atlantic coast: the autumn storms deliver Nazaré’s biggest waves outside the January-February peak, and the cliff-top viewing of 20-meter surf is extraordinary. The Beaujolais Nouveau comparison: Portugal’s own vinho verde and novo wine arrive in November. And Lisbon in November rain, emptied of visitors, is quietly excellent.
Weather in November
Lisbon: 11°C to 18°C. The rain arrives properly in November — the Atlantic fronts bringing extended periods of wet weather between clear spells. Pack a waterproof layer; plan for indoor culture as well as outdoor.
Porto: 9°C to 15°C. November in Porto is authentic winter atmosphere — grey skies, frequent rain, the tile-covered buildings of the historic center vivid in wet weather. Porto in November is atmospheric rather than comfortable.
Algarve: 14°C to 21°C. The warmest part of Portugal in November. Rain possible but the Algarve’s southern position means more clear days than Lisbon. Swimming over (water 18°C) but walking and dining remain excellent.
Alentejo: 9°C to 16°C. Autumn in the cork oak plains — the mushroom season continues, the landscape green again after summer.
Douro Valley: 8°C to 15°C. The vines are fully dormant by late November — the terraces bare, the valley quiet. Not its most beautiful month but deeply atmospheric.
Nazaré — Big Wave Peak Approaching
November is when Nazaré’s surf begins approaching its winter peak:
November swells: The Atlantic storm season is well established — major low-pressure systems tracking across the North Atlantic generate the large swells that travel south to Nazaré. November typically produces 5–8 significant big wave days.
The current world records: Nazaré has produced multiple world surfing records — the largest waves ridden and the largest waves paddled into. November 2017 produced some of the most documented sessions in big wave history.
Viewing strategy: The cliff above Praia do Norte (a 10-minute walk from the funicular upper station) provides the best free vantage point. When major swells are forecast, the cliff fills — arrive 30 minutes before the swell peaks. Check Surfline or Magic Seaweed for 10-day Atlantic swell forecasts.
Nazaré accommodation in November: Near-winter pricing — the town is quiet outside of major swell days when the surf community arrives. The lighthouse fort above the cliff (used as headquarters by pioneer big wave surfer Garrett McNamara) is worth the walk regardless of swell conditions.
Novo Wine Season
November is when Portugal’s new wines arrive:
Vinho Verde Novo: The new vintage Vinho Verde (green wine — young, slightly fizzy, low alcohol) begins arriving in November from the Minho region. The best Vinho Verde is consumed young — November new vintage is the freshest the wine will be.
Beaujolais comparison: Portugal’s restaurant culture celebrates new wines less formally than France’s Beaujolais Nouveau day, but the arrival of the novo harvest wines in November is a genuine seasonal marker in Porto and the north.
Lisbon wine bars in November: The new vintage tasting season begins — wine bars throughout Lisbon run November tastings of the new Douro, Alentejo, and Vinho Verde releases.
Lisbon in November
November Lisbon is the city returned to itself:
The fado houses: Clube de Fado, Tasca do Chico, Tasca do Jaime — the authentic fado venues in the Alfama and Mouraria. November audiences are heavily local; the experience is the most authentic of the year outside January-February.
Museu Calouste Gulbenkian: The Gulbenkian Foundation’s museum — one of the great private art collections in Europe, from Egyptian antiquities to Lalique glassware. November without queuing. The gardens are in autumn color.
Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga: Portugal’s primary art museum — the Flemish, Portuguese Renaissance, and decorative arts collection. The 15th-century Panels of São Vicente (attributed to Nuno Gonçalves) alone justify the visit. November access is immediate.
Time Out Market Lisboa: The covered market in Cais do Sodré — November is when it’s most useful as a food destination rather than a tourist attraction. The quality remains consistent year-round; the crowd shifts to local in November.
Algarve in November
The Algarve out of season — a different proposition than the summer beach experience:
Coastal walking: The Fishermen’s Trail (Rota Vicentina) on the southwest coast — November walking temperatures are ideal (15–18°C). The trail runs 226km from Porto Covo to Sagres; sections can be walked independently.
Lagos in November: The town without beach crowds — the Ponta da Piedade formations are accessible by boat (November sea conditions permit most days), the old town relaxed, the restaurants open and welcoming.
Monchique: The inland mountain range above the Algarve coast — cork oak forests, medronho distilleries (the local arbutus fruit firewater, distilled in autumn), and the highest point in southern Portugal (Fóia, 902m). November fog on the mountain is atmospheric.
Budget in November
| Category | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (Lisbon) | €65–€115/night | €135–€290/night |
| Accommodation (Algarve) | €50–€90/night | €100–€220/night |
| Accommodation (Porto) | €55–€95/night | €115–€240/night |
| Meals | €10–€21/meal | €24–€65/meal |
Near-minimum pricing. November is the second cheapest month after January-February. The value-to-experience gap narrows as fewer travelers choose it despite genuinely good conditions (particularly in the Algarve).
Practical Notes
- Nazaré swell timing: The best big wave experiences require flexible dates — plan 1–2 extra nights in the region and check surf forecasts on arrival. Don’t travel to Nazaré specifically for waves without confirming swell forecast first.
- November rain in Lisbon: Atlantic fronts can bring 3–4 consecutive days of rain. Build indoor culture (museums, fado, wine bars) into the itinerary as the default plan, outdoor as the bonus.
- Algarve coastal road in November: The N268 coastal road through the Vicentine coast is beautiful in November — empty, with dramatic cliff scenery and the chance of Atlantic storms visible from the clifftops.
The Short Version
November Portugal is the deep off-season with a specific appeal — Nazaré’s big waves approaching peak, the new wine season opening, the Algarve warm enough for cliff walks and restaurant culture, and Lisbon returned to its local self. The rain and the grey weather are real; the value and the lack of crowds are too. For travelers who accept Portugal’s Atlantic climate on its own terms, November delivers extraordinary access at minimum prices.
