Best Time to Visit Spain: Month-by-Month Guide

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

Spain’s climate varies dramatically from north to south and east to west. The Basque Country gets Atlantic weather (mild and rainy). Andalucía bakes in 40°C summers. Barcelona sits in a Mediterranean sweet spot. Understanding these differences helps enormously in planning.

The Short Answer

Best overall: April–May and September–October
Best weather (south): June and October
Best beach season: Late June through September
Best value: November–February
Avoid: August in Andalucía (extreme heat), July–August in Barcelona (packed)

Month-by-Month

January & February

Cold in Madrid (3–8°C), mild in Barcelona (10–14°C), and warm in the Canary Islands (20–22°C). Low season everywhere except ski resorts (Pyrenees, Sierra Nevada). Excellent time for museum-focused city breaks in Madrid and Barcelona — no queues, low prices.

Special: Carnival in Cádiz (February) is one of the best in Europe — satirical, irreverent, and uniquely Spanish.

March & April

Spring arrives — particularly beautiful in Andalucía where orange blossom fills the air in Seville and Granada. Temperatures comfortable (15–22°C in the south, 10–16°C in Madrid). Semana Santa (Holy Week) before Easter is Spain’s most dramatic cultural event — elaborate processions in Seville, Málaga, and Granada with extraordinary solemnity.

April–May ⭐ Excellent

One of the best times. Wildflowers blooming, comfortable walking temperatures everywhere, and crowds haven’t hit summer levels. Seville’s Feria de Abril (two weeks after Easter) is one of Spain’s great celebrations — flamenco, horses, and all-night parties in decorated tents. Barcelona is perfect in May.

June ⭐ Very good

Warm (25–30°C in Madrid, 23–27°C in Barcelona, up to 35°C in Seville). Summer tourism builds but hasn’t peaked. Nit de Sant Joan (23 June) is celebrated across Catalonia and Valencia with bonfires, fireworks, and beach parties — one of Europe’s most festive nights.

July & August — Peak Season

Hot everywhere. Seville regularly hits 42–45°C in August — genuinely dangerous heat for outdoor sightseeing. Barcelona is 28–32°C and extremely crowded. Beaches are packed. Prices peak. Many city residents leave for the coast, making some neighbourhoods quieter but some restaurants closed.

Exception: The Spanish islands (Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca, Canaries) are specifically designed for this — if beach and nightlife are the goal, July–August is exactly right.

September ⭐ Best month

Temperatures start dropping from brutal summer highs. The Basque Country’s La Tomatina (late August/early September in Buñol, Valencia) and San Sebastián Film Festival are highlights. Barcelona breathes again. Andalucía becomes walkable. Highly recommended.

October

Good weather in the Mediterranean zone (22–26°C). Madrid gets cooler (15–20°C). The Rioja harvest in La Rioja wine region is celebrated with grape-treading festivals. Far fewer tourists than summer. Excellent value.

November & December

Cool (10–16°C in Barcelona, 6–12°C in Madrid). Rain returns to the north. Christmas markets in major cities. The Canary Islands become the go-to winter escape for Europeans — warm (22°C), breezy, and far from the winter grey.

Regional Notes

Madrid: Continental climate — hot summers (35°C+), cold winters (sub-zero possible). Best April–June and September–October.

Barcelona: Mediterranean — mild, pleasant year-round. Peak summer (July–August) is sweaty and extremely crowded. Best May–June and September.

Andalucía (Seville, Granada, Málaga): Very hot summers. Best March–May and October.

Basque Country (San Sebastián, Bilbao): Atlantic weather — mild and rainy. Best June–September for reliable weather.

Galicia (Santiago de Compostela): Wet and green. Can be beautiful in any season; summer is safest for the Camino.

Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Ibiza): Beach season May–October; peak July–August.
