Spain in November: Autumn's Quiet, Truffle Season, and the Canary Islands Peak
Plan your trip
November is Spain’s most overlooked travel month — and one of its most rewarding for independent travelers. The tourist infrastructure is fully operational, the weather in the south remains mild, prices are at their annual minimum, and you move through sites that are often genuinely deserted. The Canary Islands enter peak season for northern Europeans chasing winter sun. And in Aragon and the Pyrenees foothills, the truffle season begins.
Weather in November
Madrid: 7°C to 16°C. Autumn in full force — cold mornings, comfortable afternoons. The Retiro park in late autumn gold is one of the better park photographs in Europe.
Barcelona: 12°C to 19°C. Mild enough for outdoor café life in the afternoon. Rain possible. Sea too cold for swimming (18°C) but coastal walks are excellent.
Seville: 13°C to 22°C. The best time to visit Seville after October — mild, clear, uncrowded. The streets are back to local rhythm.
Andalusia (general): 12°C to 22°C. Comfortable for all outdoor tourism. Occasional rain, but the landscape is green from the first autumn rains.
Canary Islands: 20°C to 26°C. Beach season begins for northern European visitors. November is the start of the high season for sun seekers — full resort operation, sea 23–24°C.
Pyrenees: Cold, first snowfall possible. Ski season opens at higher elevation resorts by late November.
Why November Works
Crowds: November sees the lowest foreign tourist numbers of the year across mainland Spain. The Alhambra’s coveted Nasrid Palace tickets are more available (still need to book). The Prado in Madrid has the intimacy of a private museum on weekdays. Sagrada Família has shorter queues than any other month except December.
Prices: Hotels across mainland Spain hit or near annual minimums in November. A room that costs €200 in August might cost €65 in November. Restaurant reservations that require weeks of lead time in summer can often be made same-day.
Andalusia: The sightseeing season in the south is actually better in November than summer — you’re not competing with 42°C heat. Seville, Granada, and Córdoba are at their most functional: mild temperatures, local atmosphere, historical sites without oppressive queuing.
The Alhambra in November
November is the month to visit the Alhambra. The Nasrid Palaces (the most in-demand ticket in Spain) have more availability than June-August, though advance booking is still required. The visit context:
- Morning Nasrid visit: The light in the Comares Tower and the Court of the Lions in November morning light is different from summer — lower angle, gold-toned, more atmospheric
- Alcazaba fortress views: The Sierra Nevada from the fortress towers in November often shows first snow on the peaks — the contrast with the palace gardens below is remarkable
- Generalife gardens: Less verdant than spring, but quieter and more contemplative
Book via alhambra-patronato.es — available 3 months in advance.
Truffle Season
The black winter truffle (Tuber melanosporum) season begins in November in Aragon, the Pyrenees foothills, and Teruel province. Spain is the world’s largest producer of black truffles.
Experiences:
- Truffle hunting with dogs: Several agro-tourism operations near Sarrión (Teruel, the self-described “truffle capital of the world”) offer truffle hunting with truffle dogs (labradors trained to detect the fungus by scent)
- Truffle market in Mora de Rubielos: The local market fills with truffles in November-December
- Restaurant scene in Zaragoza and Teruel: Black truffle appears on menus in November across Aragon — at lower prices than in France or Italy for comparable quality
Canary Islands Peak Season
While mainland Spain quiets for winter, the Canary Islands enter high season:
Tenerife: The island’s south (Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos) receives peak winter sun tourism from the UK and Germany. Teide National Park and the Anaga Rural Park on the north are accessible with less beach-resort crowd.
Gran Canaria: Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas — one of the best urban beaches in the world — with calm Canarian city life around it. The Cañón del Bentaiga and Roque Nublo interior are extraordinary.
Lanzarote: The most architecturally cohesive Canary Island — César Manrique’s buildings integrated into the volcanic landscape. Jameos del Agua, Jameos del Agua, Fundación César Manrique are all worth visiting.
La Palma: The “Beautiful Island” — lush, volcanic, relatively undeveloped. The Caldera de Taburiente national park and the Ruta de los Volcanes hiking trail are accessible year-round.
November in Madrid
The Spanish capital in November is purely cultural tourism, no beach distraction:
- The Prado Triangle: Prado-Reina Sofía-Thyssen — three of the world’s greatest art museums, all within walking distance. Weekday November mornings: minimal queues.
- El Rastro (Sunday flea market): November’s cooler temperatures make the outdoor market browsing more pleasant than summer
- Taberna and bodega culture: Traditional Madrid wine bars — caves (calles) de los bodegueros in La Latina — function best in cooler months
- Flamenco tablaos: Madrid’s serious flamenco venues (Casa Patas, Corral de la Morería) are less tourist-overwhelmed in November — the shows are the same, the context more intimate
Budget in November
| Category | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (mainland) | €28–€65/night | €70–€160/night |
| Accommodation Canary Islands | €45–€95/night | €110–€250/night |
| Meals | €8–€15/meal | €20–€50/meal |
Annual minimum pricing for mainland Spain. This is the best value month for cultural tourism across Andalusia, Madrid, and Barcelona.
The Short Version
November is Spain for travelers who want the experience without the performance. The Alhambra with elbow room. Seville at mild temperatures with locals in the tapas bars. Madrid’s museums as they should always be: quiet enough to actually look at the paintings. Add the Canary Islands for genuine winter sun, or the Pyrenean truffle country for something entirely different. November doesn’t make a great Instagram destination — it makes a great trip.
