Egypt in December: Peak Season Returns, Christmas at the Pyramids, Red Sea Winter Sun
Plan your trip
December is when Egypt’s tourism machine reaches full speed. Temperatures across the country are at their most comfortable — pleasant enough that the Pyramids can be visited all day without special precautions, and the Nile is calm and reflective. European winter-sun travelers fill the Red Sea resorts. Organized tour groups from across the world converge on Luxor and Aswan. It’s the best weather month alongside January, and the most expensive as a result.
Weather & Conditions
Cairo: 10–18°C. Cool mornings, warm afternoons. The cleanest air of the year — clear blue skies over the Pyramids.
Luxor: 12–22°C. Ideal. Light jacket in the morning, single layer by afternoon. Zero heat issues at any hour.
Aswan: 14–24°C. Egypt’s warmest major city in December, which makes it the most popular for winter visitors.
Red Sea: 18–24°C air, 22–24°C water. A 3mm wetsuit recommended for extended diving. Warm enough for active snorkeling.
Sinai: 12–18°C days, cold at night (3–8°C). The famous Mount Sinai sunrise hike requires serious warm layers — summit temperature can be below 0°C.
What to Do
Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx: December temperatures make the Giza Plateau fully enjoyable at any hour. Sunrise visits are particularly beautiful in December — the low winter sun rakes across the pyramids’ faces at a dramatic angle. The Sound and Light Show runs in multiple languages at 6:30pm nightly. Book the optional camel rides directly at the official stands to avoid touts.
Luxor and Karnak Temples by night: The Karnak Sound and Light Show runs December evenings at 6:30pm. Walking through the hypostyle hall — with its 134 massive columns — under dramatic night illumination is a genuinely memorable experience. Luxor Temple is also floodlit at night and accessible until late; the complex takes on a different character in December evening light.
Nile cruise peak season: December is the most popular month for Nile cruises. The large floating hotels (30–200 passengers), smaller boats (8–20 passengers), and traditional dahabiyas all operate at full capacity. Book 3–4 months ahead for December cruise dates.
Red Sea diving, Ras Mohamed and Brothers Islands: The water is cooler than summer but visibility often exceeds 30m in December — some divers argue December–January has the best visibility of the year. The Brothers Islands liveaboard route is excellent.
Siwa Oasis in December: The Western Desert oasis in December is at ideal temperature — days around 20°C, cold nights below 10°C. The Great Sand Sea, Cleopatra’s Bath spring, and the ancient Oracle Temple are all accessible. Siwa dates are at their best in late November–December — fresh-harvested and extraordinary.
Festivals & Events
Christmas (December 25): Egypt’s Coptic Christmas falls January 7, but Western Christmas is observed commercially and by the international expat and tourist communities. Larger hotels in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan run Christmas dinner events. It’s not a public holiday in Egypt but international-facing businesses cater to it.
New Year’s Eve: Major hotels in Cairo (particularly along the Nile Corniche), Aswan, and Hurghada run elaborate New Year’s Eve events. Cairo’s Nile rooftop parties are well-established. Book hotel New Year’s packages 2–3 months ahead.
Ras el-Sana el-Mesihiya (Coptic New Year, September 11 on the Coptic calendar): Falls in September, not December, despite the name. December has no major Coptic celebrations.
Practical Tips
December is Egypt’s most expensive month, matching January. Hotels in Luxor and Aswan charge their highest rates. Nile cruise boats are at full-price inventory. The iconic sites (Pyramids, Valley of the Kings, Karnak) have their highest visitor volumes.
The payoff is the complete, unconstrained experience. December is when Egypt’s ancient monuments function as the full historical spectacle they’re meant to be — comfortable temperatures, all facilities operating, and the atmosphere of a living destination at its most active.
Book Nile cruise accommodation 3–4 months ahead for December dates. Book Luxor and Aswan hotels 2–3 months ahead. Cairo hotels have more inventory but December fills up.
Christmas week (December 22–31) is the most expensive single period. The first two weeks of December offer similar temperatures at 20–25% lower prices.
Who December Is For
First-time Egypt visitors who want the full iconic experience in ideal conditions and are willing to pay for it. International winter-sun travelers heading to the Red Sea. Anyone combining the ancient sites with a beach segment. December is the gateway month to Egypt’s high season — the best starting point if you’ve never been.
