Egypt in October: Perfect Temperature Window, Abu Simbel Alignment, Season Reopens
Plan your trip
October is the month Egypt graduates from “challenging to visit” to “excellent to visit.” Luxor and Aswan temperatures drop to a range where you can walk the ancient sites at any hour without severe heat management. The Abu Simbel solar alignment on October 22 draws a focused group of visitors to Nubia. And the organized tour groups from Europe are just beginning to arrive, meaning the sites have a proper visitor presence but not yet the peak-season congestion of January–February.
Weather & Conditions
Cairo: 20–28°C. Comfortable. Evenings are pleasant. A light jacket useful for after sunset.
Luxor: 22–32°C. Genuinely comfortable at most hours. The 10am–3pm window is warm but manageable. This is a significant shift from September.
Aswan: 24–34°C. Warm afternoons but no longer extreme. Abu Simbel at any hour is now comfortable.
Red Sea: 26–30°C air, 25–27°C water. Excellent. The water is still warm enough for extended diving without a wetsuit.
Sinai: 22–28°C. Ideal for desert trekking and hiking.
Alexandria: 20–25°C. Mediterranean autumn. A pleasant month for the city.
What to Do
Full Luxor West Bank day: October allows the full west bank circuit — Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s Temple (Deir el-Bahari), Medinet Habu, and the Colossi of Memnon — at a comfortable pace. Start at 7am, complete by 1pm, and the heat is never oppressive. This is the kind of thorough exploration that July makes impossible.
Abu Simbel Solar Alignment (October 22): The second of the year’s two solar alignment events at Ramesses II’s temple. The sun penetrates the 65m corridor and illuminates the four statues at the innermost sanctuary at 6am. The event lasts 20 minutes. Book accommodation in Abu Simbel village (Eskaleh Nubian Ecolodge is excellent) for the night of October 21 to avoid the early-morning convoy scramble from Aswan.
Karnak Temple Sound and Light Show: The evening light and sound show at Karnak Temple runs most nights. Walking through the temple complex after dark, illuminated with dramatic light and accompanied by narration, gives a completely different perspective on the scale of the complex. October evenings at Karnak are at ideal temperature.
Nile cruise high season begins: October marks the start of the Nile cruise high season. Quality dahabiya operators fill their boats quickly from October onward. The atmosphere on the river — cool mornings, warm afternoons, orange sunset over palm trees and limestone cliffs — is at its best in October.
Sinai Bedouin desert trek: The St. Catherine Protectorate and the surrounding high Sinai plateau are at peak hiking condition in October. The Bedouin trail network connects ancient caravan routes between oases, monastic sites, and granite peaks. Multi-day treks with Bedouin guides from the town of St. Catherine are available and excellent.
Festivals & Events
Abu Simbel Festival (October 22): Organized cultural celebrations at the temple. Local Nubian music, dance, and a significant gathering of Egyptians and international visitors for the sunrise alignment.
Food and culture festivals, Cairo (variable): Cairo hosts various arts and cultural events in autumn. The Cairo International Film Festival typically runs in November but some screenings and events precede it.
Practical Tips
October is the beginning of the winter booking pressure. Nile cruise and dahabiya operators fill October and November dates quickly. If you haven’t booked yet for October travel, do it immediately — a 2-week lead time that was fine in September doesn’t work for October’s quality options.
Hotels in Luxor and Aswan rise from their summer lows in October but are still well below the January peak. October is genuinely good value — better temperatures than summer with lower prices than the January peak season.
The Abu Simbel event on October 22: if you can’t overnight in Abu Simbel village, the Aswan convoy option requires departing at 3–4am. Book a seat through your Aswan hotel or a reputable tour operator (not a tout).
Who October Is For
The strongest case for Egypt as a destination comes in October. All the iconic itinerary components — Pyramids, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel, Nile cruise — are fully accessible at comfortable temperatures. It’s not as cheap as September but it’s not as expensive as January. October rewards travelers who plan 6–8 weeks ahead.
