Egypt in September: Heat Breaks, Crowds Gone, Value Season Begins
Plan your trip
September is the turning point for Egypt travel. Temperatures are still high — Luxor averages 38–40°C in early September — but the trend is downward, and by the end of the month the afternoons have dropped to where a properly timed outdoor excursion no longer requires the strict sunrise-only strategy. The international tour operators begin their autumn campaigns, pre-booking October and November tours, but September itself remains quiet. This is the last value month before winter prices return.
Weather & Conditions
Cairo: 24–33°C. Noticeably cooler than August. Evenings become pleasant.
Luxor: 26–39°C in early September, dropping to 24–34°C by month’s end. The shift is meaningful — a 34°C afternoon is manageable in shade; a 44°C one is not.
Aswan: 28–40°C, dropping to 25–36°C by late September. The trend is in the right direction.
Red Sea: 30–34°C air, 27–29°C water. Still excellent dive conditions. The summer crowd is departing; September is good value.
Alexandria: 23–28°C. Pleasant. The Mediterranean is warm enough for swimming (24–26°C water).
What to Do
Valley of the Kings, extended visit: September’s improving temperatures allow more thorough exploration. A 3-hour early morning visit — arriving at opening (6–7am) and staying until 9:30–10am — is feasible by late September without the emergency heat management of high summer. The recently opened Ramesses VII tomb and the elaborate Ramesses VI tomb are worth the extra tickets.
Nile cruise with expanding daily schedule: As September progresses, the window for on-deck activities extends. By late September, evening cruises on the Nile are genuinely pleasant again — sitting on a felucca deck at sunset in 28°C weather with a cup of hibiscus tea is one of Egypt’s signature experiences.
Abu Simbel in September: The solar alignment of October 22 is approaching. September visits to Abu Simbel catch the site at low-crowd and reasonable (if still warm) temperatures. The sound and light show at Abu Simbel runs nightly — worth booking for an evening visit.
Siwa Oasis: The Western Desert oasis is accessible and comfortable in September. The Great Sand Sea and the Oracle Temple of Amun are the highlights. Natural hot spring pools (Cleopatra’s Bath) and the salt lake are enjoyable in September warmth. The drive from Cairo is long but the remote character of Siwa is worth it.
Sinai desert trekking: The high plateaus of the Sinai interior (around St. Catherine and Mount Sinai) are at their best in September and October. The temperatures are warm but not extreme at altitude. Hiking with Bedouin guides through canyons, oases, and sandstone formations is a very different Egypt than the Nile Valley.
Festivals & Events
Abu Simbel Solar Alignment (October 22) preparation: September is ideal for booking this event without the last-minute scramble. The October 22 sunrise alignment — when the sun illuminates the sanctuary of Ramesses II — draws visitors from across the world. Make your reservation in September.
Islamic New Year (Ras al-Sana al-Hijriya, variable): The Islamic New Year is a public holiday observed with varying enthusiasm. Businesses may have modified hours on this date; most tourist infrastructure continues normally.
Start of the High Season: September sees the beginning of the European winter tour programming. Nile cruise operators begin filling their October–February schedules. Booking windows for quality dahabiyas (traditional boats) shrink in September for November–February dates.
Practical Tips
September remains one of Egypt’s lowest-priced months despite improving conditions. The end-of-summer hotel and cruise rates persist through September. This is the best value window: better weather than July–August, lower prices than October onward.
Book any Nile cruise for October–November dates now — September is when reputable dahabiya operators fill their winter inventory.
The Red Sea is excellent in September. September dive packages on liveaboard boats are typically good value — summer pricing, improving conditions.
By late September, the afternoon window for outdoor site visits expands to 4–5pm (after the worst heat passes). This extends the useful day significantly compared to mid-summer.
Who September Is For
Value-focused travelers who want Egypt’s best itinerary — Pyramids, Luxor, Aswan, Nile cruise — at summer prices with autumn conditions. Divers who want the Red Sea at a value price before October demand increases. And travelers who want to be in Luxor or Aswan as the season turns, watching the tourist infrastructure reinflate around them while their accommodation bill remains at its September floor.
