India in November: Diwali, Pushkar Fair, and the Season's Best Conditions

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

November is the argument that India makes to every skeptic who says the country is “too much.” In November, the heat is gone, the monsoon is over, the festival season is at its peak, and the iconic destinations — Taj Mahal, Jaipur’s Amber Fort, Kerala’s backwaters — are fully accessible in ideal conditions. Diwali (when it falls in November) makes the country luminous. The Pushkar Camel Fair brings the desert alive. November is the month India becomes undeniable.

Weather & Conditions

Delhi: 14–26°C. Excellent. Some days are summery; evenings require a light jacket. The fog season hasn’t started.

Rajasthan: 16–28°C. Perfect. Warm enough for short sleeves at noon, cool enough for a layer at night. The desert circuit at its best.

Agra (Taj Mahal): 14–26°C. Clear sky, crisp light. The Taj in November morning light is the classic version.

Kerala: 24–32°C. The northeast monsoon affects the Malabar coast but the rest of Kerala is clear. Excellent for the backwaters and hill stations.

Goa: 24–32°C. Beach season fully operational. Water is clear, warm, and calm.

Varanasi: 14–24°C. Dev Deepawali (Diwali of the Gods) in November is one of India’s most extraordinary events.

What to Do

Diwali (if November — variable by lunar calendar): When Diwali falls in November, the festival fills the country with diyas (clay oil lamps), rangoli (colored floor patterns), fireworks, and mithai sweets. Varanasi’s Dev Deepawali — celebrated on the full moon night 15 days after Diwali — is the most spectacular: 1 million diyas are lit on the ghats of the Ganges, devotees float flower lamps on the river, and the entire city reflects in the water. Jaipur and Udaipur are equally dramatic on Diwali night itself.

Pushkar Camel Fair (full moon of Kartik, variable October–November): The Pushkar Fair combines a massive livestock trading event with a Hindu pilgrimage to Pushkar’s sacred lake. Fifty thousand camels, horses, and cattle are traded. Folk musicians, acrobats, and cultural performances fill the town. The holy ghat dip on the full moon night is a pilgrimage event observed by hundreds of thousands. One of the most visually extraordinary events in the world.

Classic Rajasthan circuit: November is the optimal month for Jaipur–Jodhpur–Udaipur–Jaisalmer. Amber Fort’s mirror hall, Mehrangarh Fort’s commanding Jodhpur views, Lake Pichola at dusk, and the Jaisalmer desert fort — all in comfortable temperatures. Book the best heritage havelis; they’re worth it in November.

Taj Mahal, Agra: Sunrise tickets (6am entry) in November produce the classic image — Taj in morning mist and golden light, minimal crowds compared to January. The mist in early November can be particularly atmospheric.

Varanasi ghats in November: The ghats of Varanasi along the Ganges are extraordinary in November. The Ganga Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat runs every evening at sunset — a choreographed ritual of fire, bells, and flowers with thousands of spectators on the steps. Book a small boat to watch from the river.

Festivals & Events

Diwali (variable, October or November): India’s festival of lights, celebrating the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya. Exact date from Hindu lunar calendar.

Dev Deepawali, Varanasi (full moon 15 days after Diwali): One million lamps on the Ganges ghats. Boats circle the reflection. A spectacle without equivalent.

Pushkar Camel Fair (full moon of Kartik): The world’s largest camel fair.

Goa Carnival (different timing — typically February/March; but Goa November is beach season): The beach state is fully in swing; the Sunburn Festival (electronic music) runs in late November/early December in Vagator.

Practical Tips

November is peak travel season in India. Book everything 3–4 months ahead for specific festival dates. Pushkar during the fair: 4+ months ahead, mandatory.

Delhi airport fog starts occasionally in November but the serious fog season is December–January. November is the last clear month for Delhi early morning departures.

November after Diwali: prices begin their full seasonal increases. The window between Diwali and Christmas is the busy season’s rising slope — plan ahead.

Who November Is For

The straightforward answer: almost everyone. November is India’s most broadly excellent month for international visitors. The specific draws — Diwali, Pushkar, Varanasi’s Dev Deepawali, and perfect Rajasthan temperatures — make it the month that justifies “always wanted to go to India.” Go in November.
