India in October: Dussehra, Diwali Season Begins, and the Tourist Season Opens
Plan your trip
October is when India’s tourism season formally reopens. The monsoon has fully retreated from most regions. Temperatures across the north return to the comfortable range that makes Rajasthan’s forts and Kerala’s backwaters enjoyable without heat management. Dussehra — the festival celebrating the defeat of evil — burns 20-meter effigies of Ravana across the country. And Diwali, the festival of lights, is either in late October or early November, filling cities with diyas, fireworks, and sweet shops selling mithai in gift boxes.
Weather & Conditions
Delhi: 18–28°C. Ideal. The post-monsoon clarity before winter fog arrives makes October Delhi genuinely pleasant.
Rajasthan: 20–30°C. The tourist season opens in earnest. Conditions are excellent across the desert circuit.
Kerala: 24–32°C. The northeast monsoon arrives on the Kerala coast in mid-October (different from the southwest monsoon — it brings focused rain to the Malabar coast but leaves most of Kerala functional). The backwaters remain excellent.
Mumbai: 26–32°C. Comfortable. Post-monsoon weather is Mumbai’s best.
Goa: 26–32°C. Beach season begins. The first international charter flights arrive.
Himalayas: 5–15°C. The high passes begin closing for winter by late October. October is the last trekking month.
What to Do
Dussehra (Vijayadashami, early October typically): The 10-day Navratri festival climaxes on Dussehra with the burning of giant effigies of Ravana (the demon king of the Ramayana). Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan burns some of the largest effigies in the country (30–40 meters tall). Mysore’s Dasara — a royal procession of a caparisoned elephant carrying the golden howdah — is one of the most elaborate state Dussehra celebrations.
Pushkar Camel Fair, Rajasthan (October–November, depending on lunar calendar): The world-famous Pushkar Camel Fair brings 50,000+ camels, horses, and cattle to the desert town of Pushkar in Rajasthan, along with acrobats, folk musicians, and traders. The lunar calendar date shifts annually — check the specific year’s date. The town fills with travelers from everywhere; book accommodation 3–4 months ahead.
Diwali preparation and festival (late October or November): In years when Diwali falls in October, the transformation is spectacular. Bazaars overflow with diyas, lights, sweets, and firecrackers. Jaipur, Udaipur, and Varanasi are extraordinary during Diwali — the cities light thousands of clay lamps along the ghats and forts. The evening of Diwali itself is a sensory overload of fireworks at every scale.
Backwater houseboat, Kerala: October is an excellent month for Kerala houseboat cruises — the monsoon has ended, the backwaters are full and clear, and the northeast monsoon affects only the far north coast. Alleppey-Kollam houseboat routes are at their best.
Andaman Islands: October is when the Andaman Islands begin their tourist season after the monsoon. The waters are clearing, the beaches are empty, and Havelock Island’s Radhanagar Beach — one of Asia’s best — is accessible and serene.
Festivals & Events
Mysore Dasara (10 days in October): Karnataka’s most elaborate cultural festival. The Mysore Palace is illuminated with 100,000 light bulbs. The final day’s procession features a gold howdah on an elephant. A major domestic and international tourist event.
Pushkar Camel Fair (variable, October–November): The full moon of Kartik month (October or November) marks the pilgrimage to Pushkar Lake and the fair.
Diwali (variable, October or November): India’s biggest festival — exact date shifts by lunar calendar.
Practical Tips
October is when hotel prices begin their winter season increases. Book Rajasthan and Kerala accommodation 6–8 weeks ahead for October. Pushkar requires 3–4 months for anything near the fair dates.
Diwali dates vary by year. If Diwali falls in October, Varanasi is one of the most extraordinary places in the world to be — thousands of floating diyas on the Ganges, fireworks from every ghat, and the city transformed.
The Andaman Islands require advance booking for their brief window of good diving conditions (October–April). Flights from Chennai or Kolkata; book 4–6 weeks ahead.
Who October Is For
India’s high season is beginning and October captures it at the leading edge — decent conditions, not yet January crowded. Festival visitors targeting Dussehra or Diwali. Rajasthan travelers who want the peak window without peak January prices. Beach season openers in Goa and Andamans. And anyone whose India itinerary includes Kerala backwaters — October through February is the backwater season.
