Best Time to Visit Kazakhstan: Month-by-Month Guide

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

Kazakhstan has one of the world’s most extreme continental climates — winter temperatures below -30°C in Astana, summer highs above 40°C on the steppe. Almaty is significantly milder due to its mountain location. Timing is everything.

The Short Answer

Best for Almaty: April–June and September–October
Best for mountain hiking: June–September
Best for Charyn Canyon: April–June and September–October
Best for steppe travel: May–September
Avoid Astana: December–February (extreme cold, -25 to -35°C)
Avoid the steppe: July–August (40°C+ heat)

Month-by-Month

January & February — Avoid (most regions)

Kazakhstan’s coldest months. Astana: -20 to -35°C, severe wind chill. Almaty: -10 to 5°C (milder due to mountains). Roads can be treacherous. Not recommended except for Almaty city breaks with indoor focus. Some ski at Shymbulak.

March

Transition. Still cold in Astana (-5 to 10°C). Almaty warming slowly (5–15°C). Nauryz (March 21–23) — the Kazakh New Year, a major national celebration with outdoor festivals, horse games, and traditional food. The best cultural event of the year.

April ⭐ (Almaty)

Spring arrives in Almaty — tulips blooming in the foothills, apricot trees blossoming, temperatures 12–22°C. Mountain trails opening up. Charyn Canyon at its most photogenic (green after winter moisture). Excellent for city culture.

May ⭐ (Almaty + mountains)

One of the best months. Almaty at 20–28°C with clear mountain views. Lower mountain trails fully open. Wildflowers in the Ile-Alatau National Park. Good for hiking and canyon exploration. Relatively uncrowded.

June ⭐⭐ (mountains + steppe)

Best month for mountain hiking — all trails open, wildflowers at peak, 20–30°C in Almaty, comfortable at altitude. Charyn Canyon is hot (35°C) but mornings are excellent. Kolsai and Kaindy Lakes accessible and beautiful.

July–August — Peak season + steppe heat

Mountain hiking: best conditions — warm, all accessible. Steppe heat: 38–44°C — not recommended for prolonged outdoor steppe travel.

Almaty: 28–35°C — hot but manageable. Burabay (Borovoe): busy family resort season.

September ⭐⭐ Best month

One of Kazakhstan’s finest months. Golden autumn colours in the Ile-Alatau foothills and Tian Shan valleys. Temperatures 15–25°C in Almaty. Mountain trails still fully open. Charyn Canyon dramatic with slanted autumn light. Almaty’s city culture at its best. Fewer tourists than July–August.

October ⭐

Autumn colours peak — especially spectacular in Altai and around Kolsai Lakes. Mountain trails beginning to close in upper zones. Almaty pleasant (10–18°C). Astana cold (5–10°C). Good for cultural travel and canyon landscapes.

November

Cold arriving fast. Snow above 2,000m in Almaty mountains. Astana becomes very cold (-5 to -15°C). Not recommended for outdoor travel.

December

Ski season begins at Shymbulak (Almaty). Almaty: -5 to 5°C. Astana: -15 to -25°C. Christmas and New Year celebrations in Almaty are lively.
