Kazakhstan in October: Autumn Steppe, Last Mountain Days, and Almaty's Golden Season

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

October is Kazakhstan’s transitional month — and it’s striking. The Tian Shan high routes are closing as the first winter snowfall consolidates above 3,000m. The steppe has turned from summer gold to autumn amber. Almaty’s famous street trees — the plane trees and birches lining the city’s Soviet-era boulevards — turn gold and then rust before the first November frosts. It’s a month that rewards visitors who appreciate the aesthetics of a place preparing for winter rather than a destination at its most accessible.

Weather & Conditions

Almaty: 8–18°C. Cool and crisp. The tree color peaks in mid-October.

Tian Shan (lower routes): 2–10°C. The lower trails (below 2,000m) are still walkable. High routes closed or inaccessible.

Astana: 2–14°C. Cold by late October. The first snow is possible.

Charyn Canyon: 10–20°C. Ideal. The canyon is comfortable all day.

Steppe: 6–18°C. Vast and brown, with dramatic cloud formations.

What to Do

Almaty autumn city walks: October is the best month to experience Almaty as a city rather than a mountain base. Panfilov Park’s 28 Guardsmen memorial surrounded by falling leaves. The Green Bazaar’s autumn harvest — still plenty of apples, plus walnuts, dried fruit, and preserved goods being stocked for winter. The Central State Museum (one of Central Asia’s finest history collections). The Zenkov Cathedral — an early 20th century Russian Orthodox cathedral built entirely from wood without nails — is surrounded by the park’s amber trees in October.

Lower Tian Shan day hikes: Routes below 2,000m remain accessible in October. The Kok-Zhailau trail from the Shymbulak ski resort area (accessible by gondola) gives Almaty views from above the city in autumn color. The Kaskelen Canyon, the Turgen Gorge lower sections, and the Medeu skating rink (opening in October for the skating season) are all accessible.

Charyn Canyon — best conditions of the year: October may be Charyn Canyon’s single finest month. The summer heat is entirely gone, the crowds have vanished, and the canyon walls take on a deeper red in the lower autumn sun. The full Valley of Castles walk (2km) plus the Charyn River gorge lower section can be done comfortably in a day. The 4-hour drive from Almaty is unchanged.

Kolsai Lakes autumn: The Kolsai Lakes in October are at their most dramatic — the larch trees surrounding the lakes turn gold and then fall, leaving the glacial blue-green water surrounded by bare slopes and light snowfall. The lower lake is accessible by the gravel road; conditions for the upper lakes require checking weather in advance.

Astana city in transition: Nur-Sultan’s (Astana’s) modernist architecture — the Bayterek tower, the Khan Shatyr entertainment complex, the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation pyramid — is best experienced in October before the brutal January cold. The city’s indoor attractions (the Central Concert Hall, the National Museum) are appropriate for October’s cooling temperatures.

Festivals & Events

Republic Day preparation: Kazakhstan’s Republic Day is November 25. October sees preparatory cultural events in Almaty and Astana.

First ice at Medeu: The Medeu speed skating rink — at 1,691m, the world’s highest outdoor skating facility — typically opens for the skating season in October. A Almaty institution.

Practical Tips

High Tian Shan in October: do not attempt routes above 2,500m without checking conditions. Snow can close passes with little warning. The lower routes are fine; the upper ones are genuinely dangerous for unprepared visitors.

Charyn Canyon logistics: October visits can depart from Almaty at a normal time. The canyon is accessible all day without heat management. Book transport through Almaty tour operators or rent a vehicle — the road is paved to the canyon entrance.

Astana in October: temperatures drop significantly. Pack layers. The city’s infrastructure is designed for cold; all major attractions are accessible regardless of weather.

Kolsai Lakes October: the gravel road to the lower lake is passable in a standard vehicle in October. Rain can make it difficult; check conditions. The larch color peaks in early-to-mid October.

Who October Is For

Autumn travelers who specifically want the color season. Charyn Canyon visitors avoiding summer heat. Almaty city culture visitors — museums, markets, architecture. Photography travelers for whom the combination of mountain snow, autumn color, and steppe light creates unique material. And travelers who don’t need maximum accessibility and appreciate Kazakhstan in transition.
