Kazakhstan in September: Apple Harvest Peak, Autumn Tian Shan, and the Season's Best Light
Plan your trip
September is Kazakhstan’s finest month. The summer heat has softened to warm days and cool nights. The apple harvest in the Almaty region reaches its peak — the Aport apple, grown in the Ile-Alatau foothills since the 19th century, is at maximum size and sweetness. The Tian Shan begins its autumn transformation: the deciduous belt below the treeline turns amber and yellow against the permanent white of the peaks. Crowds are gone. Prices are still summer rates. The light in September — the low-angle autumn sun hitting the mountains at dawn and dusk — is extraordinary for photography.
Weather & Conditions
Almaty: 14–26°C. Perfect. Warm days, cool nights. The city’s parks are full of fallen leaves.
Tian Shan (high routes): 4–14°C. First snow arriving above 3,000m by late September. Lower routes still excellent.
Astana: 10–22°C. Cooling fast. The steppe transitions to autumn gold.
Charyn Canyon: 16–28°C. Ideal — the summer heat is gone and the canyon is comfortable all day.
Steppe: 12–24°C. The grass begins to turn.
What to Do
Apple harvest, Ile-Alatau foothills: September is the reason Almaty is named “father of apples.” The orchards of Talgar, Esik, and Kaskelen — the ring of foothill towns surrounding Almaty — are in full harvest. The Aport apple (a variety introduced by Russian settlers in the 1860s from the Voronezh region) grows only in this microclimate. Almaty’s Green Bazaar in September is the best single food market experience in Kazakhstan — stacked with apples, walnuts, dried apricots, and the first pomegranates from Uzbekistan.
Tian Shan autumn trekking: September’s lower routes (below 2,800m) are at their most beautiful. The birch and maple belt along the lower Tian Shan slopes turns yellow and orange. The Big Almaty Lake achieves its most dramatic appearance — the glacial blue-green water against amber-brown slopes and white peaks. The Turgen Gorge, the Kok-Zhailau route from Medeu, and the Butakovsky waterfall trail are all accessible and far less crowded than July and August.
Charyn Canyon autumn visit: With the summer heat gone, September is the first month when Charyn Canyon can be visited throughout the day without the brutal midday heat. The 2km Valley of Castles walk, the canyon viewpoint, and the Charyn River gorge are all comfortable. An all-day Charyn excursion from Almaty becomes practical for the first time since spring.
Baikonur Cosmodrome (on request): The world’s first and largest space launch complex — where Yuri Gagarin launched in 1961 — is in southern Kazakhstan. Launches are scheduled throughout the year; September sometimes has Soyuz launches. Access requires advance arrangement through licensed tour operators and Russian Space Agency approval. The site itself is extraordinary — a Soviet space infrastructure frozen in time on the steppe.
Burabay National Park, autumn: The lake district north of Astana has its best light in September. The pine forest against the autumn-golden steppe, the granite rock formations, and the clear lake water create a landscape that doesn’t resemble any other part of Kazakhstan. Accommodation is available and much easier to book than in summer.
Festivals & Events
Almaty Apple Festival (variable September): Almaty’s apple harvest is the basis for the informal festival culture in the foothill villages. Some years organized events mark the season.
Nauryz echoes: September is the beginning of the preparation season for the following spring’s Nauryz celebrations — some cultural organizations hold autumn arts events.
Practical Tips
High-altitude trekking in September: the upper Tian Shan routes (Ak-Sai Glacier, Khan Tengri base camp area) are closing by mid-September. First serious snowfall above 3,500m can arrive any time in September. Check conditions before departing for upper routes.
Apple purchase logistics: the Almaty Green Bazaar (Zenkov Street, near Panfilov Park) is the best produce market. Vendors speak Russian and Kazakh; Google Translate handles communication easily.
Baikonur visits: minimum 4–6 weeks advance booking through operators like Kan Tengri or specialized space tourism agencies. Launch schedules change, and access is not guaranteed without Russian Space Agency clearance.
Charyn Canyon day trip: September conditions mean you can leave Almaty at a normal hour (8am), arrive at the canyon by midday, walk the full Valley of Castles circuit, and return comfortably. No longer a 4am dawn operation.
Who September Is For
Apple harvest food travelers. Autumn photography visitors — the Tian Shan in September is exceptional. Value travelers who want summer-quality conditions at off-peak pricing. Charyn Canyon visitors who refused to go in July heat. And anyone who understands that September is Kazakhstan’s single best month.
