South Korea in May: Green Season, Buddha's Birthday, and Perfect Weather
Plan your trip
If Korea has a peak month, May is the argument for it. Cherry blossoms are finished, so the April crowds have thinned. But the weather is perfect — warm days, cool evenings, dry air — and the entire country is intensely, almost aggressively green. May is when the mountains come into their own.
Weather in May
Seoul: 14°C to 24°C. Comfortable days, cool nights. The clearest skies of the year — the yellow dust season that plagues April typically eases in May. Little rain before the monsoon arrives in late June.
Busan: 16°C to 25°C. Warm enough for the beach by late May, though water temperature is still cold for swimming.
Jeju Island: 17°C to 24°C. The island is at its most beautiful — yellow rape flower fields give way to lush green hillsides.
Gyeongju/Seoraksan: Perfect hiking temperatures. Trails are fully accessible and the vegetation is at maximum richness.
Buddha’s Birthday (부처님 오신 날)
One of Korea’s most visually striking public holidays — the date follows the lunar calendar (usually mid-to-late May). Temples across the country hang thousands of colored lanterns in preparation for weeks before the date itself.
Best experiences:
- Yeondeunghoe Lantern Festival, Seoul — the night-before-Buddha’s-Birthday procession through central Seoul, from Dongdaemun to Jogyesa Temple. One of the most beautiful events in the country. Thousands of participants carry paper lanterns through city streets.
- Jogyesa Temple, Seoul — the headquarters of Korean Buddhism is covered in lanterns from mid-April through the holiday. Free to enter, stunning at night.
- Bongeunsa Temple, Gangnam — runs templestay programs throughout May; the lantern decorations here are equally impressive.
- Tongdosa, Haeinsa, Bulguksa — major temples across the country; Bulguksa in Gyeongju is a UNESCO site at its most atmospheric during this period.
Hiking in May
May is the best hiking month in Korea. The heat hasn’t arrived, trails are dry, and the greenery is at peak saturation.
Top May hikes:
- Bukhansan National Park (Seoul day trip) — the mountain inside the city, easily accessed by metro. The fortress walls and rocky peaks in May green are remarkable.
- Seoraksan National Park (Gangwon Province) — a ~4 hour bus from Seoul. Full trail access, no snow on lower peaks. Book accommodation in Sokcho early.
- Jirisan National Park — Korea’s largest mountain park. Multi-day traverse is possible in May; ideal conditions.
- Hallasan, Jeju — the summit (Baekrokdam crater) is accessible May through November. Reservation required via the Korea National Park system.
Children’s Day and Family Tourism
May 5th is Children’s Day (어린이날) — a national holiday. Theme parks (Everland, Lotte World, Seoul Land) are at maximum capacity. Families flood tourist areas. If you’re not traveling with children, avoid theme parks that day; if you are, book tickets in advance.
The surrounding Golden Week (April 30 – May 5, sometimes extending) is one of the busiest travel periods in the Korean domestic calendar. Accommodations in Jeju, Busan, and Gyeongju book out weeks in advance. Accommodation prices spike 30–50% above baseline.
May in Gyeongju
Gyeongju — the former Silla dynasty capital — is at its annual best in May. The royal tumuli (burial mounds) in Tumuli Park are intensely green. Bulguksa and Seokguram are surrounded by fresh foliage. Anapji Pond at dusk in May is one of the better travel photographs in Korea. The city is busy on weekends but manageable on weekdays.
May in Jeju
Late May on Jeju sees hydrangea blooming in the fields approaching Hallasan. The coastal olle trails (walking paths around the island perimeter) are at their most beautiful. Horse farms and green tea fields (Osulloc) are fully open. Weather is stable — rain is light before the summer rainy season arrives in July.
Budget in May
| Category | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | ₩50,000–₩80,000/night | ₩120,000–₩220,000/night |
| Daily meals | ₩9,000–₩15,000/meal | ₩20,000–₩60,000/meal |
| Transport (T-money day) | ₩5,000–₩8,000 | same |
Prices are moderate — above winter but below the summer peak. Accommodation around Golden Week (May 3–6) spikes significantly; book far in advance or plan arrivals outside that window.
Practical Notes for May
- Yellow dust (황사): Usually diminishes by May, but check the Korea Air Quality Index app if you have respiratory sensitivities. Unusually dusty days still occur.
- Rainfall: Low in May before the monsoon. Carry a light rain layer anyway.
- Crowds: Gyeongju and Jeju see heavy domestic traffic on weekends. Weekday visits are dramatically more pleasant.
- Reservations: Hallasan summit trail requires advance online booking (knps.or.kr). Book 2–3 weeks ahead.
The Short Version
May is Korea’s most balanced month — the weather is perfect, major cultural events are running, hiking is at its best, and the country is green in a way that photographs almost look like filters. The Buddhist lantern festivals add a visual and cultural richness that few other events in Korea match. This is the month to go if you have flexibility.
