South Korea in October: Fall Foliage, Seoraksan, and Perfect Hiking Weather

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

October in South Korea is the answer to the question: “What if I want fall foliage without going to Japan?” The mountain national parks turn spectacular, the weather is the best of the year, and the country operates at a pace that actually lets you enjoy it.

Weather in October

Seoul: 13–20°C, dropping to 7–12°C by late month. Clear, dry days dominate. Arguably the most comfortable weather of the year for walking the city.

Mountain national parks (Seoraksan, Jirisan): Cooler at altitude — bring a warm layer. Morning temperatures can drop to 3–5°C in late October at elevation.

Busan / Gyeongju: Slightly warmer and milder than Seoul through October. A good base for southern Korea foliage.

Jeju: Still warm in October (18–23°C). Hallasan Mountain foliage peaks mid-to-late October.

Fall Foliage: Where and When

LocationTypical Peak
Seoraksan National ParkEarly–mid October
Odaesan National ParkMid October
Naejangsan National ParkLate October–early November
Seoul (Bukhansan, Namsan)Late October–early November
GyeongjuLate October
Hallasan (Jeju)Mid–late October

Seoraksan: The Main Event

Seoraksan National Park, in Gangwon Province about 3 hours from Seoul, is Korea’s most dramatic mountain landscape — granite peaks, hidden Buddhist temples, and forested valleys. In early-to-mid October, the maple and oak turn the slopes red and gold.

The cable car (Gwondaeong Ropeway) gives quick access to elevated foliage views. Expect queues on weekends — arrive before 9am.

Biseondae Rock (a 20-minute hike) is one of the most dramatic rock formations in Korea, framed by autumn trees.

Ulsanbawi Rock (a 3-hour round trip) is the harder hike — 873 granite steps to a ridgeline with views of the entire park. Worth every step in October.

Nearby Sokcho city: A coastal town at the park entrance with an excellent seafood market (Sokcho Jungang Market), cheap accommodation, and fresh squid that local Koreans drive 3 hours from Seoul to eat.

Naejangsan: Best Late October

Naejangsan National Park in North Jeolla Province doesn’t peak until late October–early November — making it the last-standing foliage destination in Korea when everything else has already faded.

The valley tunnel of maple trees leading to Naejangsa Temple is one of the most beautiful short walks in Korea. The forest is dense and the color concentration is extraordinary.

Access: 3 hours from Seoul, 1.5 hours from Gwangju. A natural stop-off if driving or busing through the southwest.

Seoul in October

Seoul in October is the best time to be in the city. Clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and the city is not at spring capacity.

Bukhansan National Park (within Seoul city limits) has accessible autumn hiking — granite peaks above the city turning red. The Baegundae summit offers panoramic views over Seoul in October light.

Gyeongbokgung Palace in autumn: fewer crowds than April, the trees in the outer gardens turning, the guards in blue and red against gold leaves. The palace in October is more contemplative than the spring cherry blossom version.

Han River walks: October evenings on the river paths are excellent — sunset, city lights, convenience store hot drinks. The Banpo Bridge rainbow fountain runs through October.

Gyeongju in October

Gyeongju is even more beautiful in October than in April. The royal tumuli (grass-covered burial mounds) are surrounded by autumn trees, Anapji Pond reflects golden foliage, and the Bulguksa temple mountain has fall color along the approach path.

Without the cherry blossom festival crowds, Gyeongju in October feels like what it is: an ancient capital that happens to still be a living city.

Korean Thanksgiving: Chuseok

Chuseok falls in late September or early October (lunar calendar — date varies each year). It’s Korea’s most important holiday: 3–5 days off, mass domestic travel, family gatherings.

If Chuseok overlaps your trip:

  • Transportation books out weeks ahead — reserve KTX trains early
  • Some businesses close for 2–3 days
  • Major tourist sites can be crowded (but with Korean families, not tour groups — different vibe)
  • Temple stays and hanok experiences are often enhanced during Chuseok

If Chuseok doesn’t overlap: the weeks before and after Chuseok are quieter than April by a significant margin.

Budget in October

Mid-to-high season pricing in Seoul, low-to-mid elsewhere.

CategoryCost
Budget accommodation (Seoul)$30–50/night
Mid-range hotel$70–130/night
Mountain area accommodation (Sokcho, near Seoraksan)$40–90/night
KBBQ dinner (per person)$25–50
10-day trip budget$1,400–2,400

The Verdict

October is Korea’s underrated peak. It gets far less international attention than April, which makes it significantly more enjoyable. The hiking is excellent, the foliage is extraordinary at Seoraksan and Naejangsan, and Seoul in autumn light is as good as Seoul gets.

For the traveler who wants Korea without the cherry blossom media narrative — this is your month.
