South Korea in November: Autumn's Final Week and the Turn to Winter

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

November is a month of two halves. The first two weeks are the final chapter of autumn — late-season foliage in Gyeongju, Naejangsan, and the mountain parks, lower crowds than October, and some of the best photography conditions of the year. Then, around November 15–20, temperatures drop sharply and winter arrives without much ceremony. Timing your trip to the first half is the unlock.

Weather in November

Seoul: 4°C to 15°C. Sharp temperature drops through the month — early November still comfortable in layers; late November genuinely cold. First frost typically mid-to-late November.

Busan: 8°C to 18°C. Warmer south coast through mid-November. Late November is cold but not Seoul-cold.

Gyeongju: Similar to Seoul temperatures, but surrounded by more foliage. Late October through early November peak.

Naejangsan (North Jeolla): Famous for maple-heavy autumn — often the last major foliage peak in Korea, mid-to-late November.

Autumn Foliage in November

Korea’s autumn moves south and to lower elevations through October-November. By early November:

  • Seoul (Bukhansan, Namsan, palace grounds): largely finished by early November, lingering in sheltered spots
  • Gyeongju: Bulguksa temple and surrounding forest — peak often first week of November. The Buddhist complex surrounded by turning maples is one of the most photographed images in Korea.
  • Naejangsan National Park: Korea’s most famous maple park — peak typically falls between late October and mid-November. Shuttle buses run from the park entrance during peak weeks.
  • Jirisan: Late-peaking high elevations see color through first week of November

Naejangsan in peak week: The park can draw 10,000+ daily visitors. Arrive at opening (6–7 AM) for dramatically better light and fewer crowds. The cable car up to Biwon Ridge gives the best overview of the maple canopy.

BIFF and Cultural Season

The Busan International Film Festival runs in early October — not November — but November is when Korean art museums and performance spaces shift into their winter programming season.

  • Seoul Arts Center, National Theater of Korea — opera, ballet, and orchestral season peaks
  • National Museum of Korea — winter exhibitions often the year’s largest
  • Gyeongju National Museum — frequently runs autumn special exhibitions tied to the foliage season

Gyeongju in November

Gyeongju in the first two weeks of November may be the single best time to visit. Crowds are lower than October (no national holidays driving domestic tourism). The foliage at Bulguksa and around the royal tumuli is extraordinary. Anapji Pond at dawn with mist and color is worth the early alarm. And temperatures, while cool, remain walkable.

Day trip consideration: Gyeongju is 2.5 hours from Seoul by KTX (to Singyeongju station). Many travelers do it as a day trip, but a one-night stay allows sunrise at the tumuli — worth the extra effort.

The Turn to Winter

After roughly November 20, Korea shifts register. Seoul temperatures drop below 5°C at night. The last leaves fall. Street vendors switch from cold drinks to hotteok (sweet pancakes) and roasted chestnuts. Jjimjilbang usage increases noticeably.

What stays great in late November:

  • Indoor cultural activities — museums, galleries, department stores
  • Namsan in early morning snow (if it falls in late November — rare but possible)
  • Hot food culture kicks into high gear — sundubu jjigae, galbitang, doenjang jjigae
  • Shopping: department stores begin pre-Christmas promotions; Dongdaemun wholesale shopping is excellent in winter

Budget in November

CategoryBudgetMid-range
Accommodation₩45,000–₩75,000/night₩110,000–₩200,000/night
Meals₩9,000–₩15,000/meal₩20,000–₩55,000/meal
Transport₩5,000–₩8,000/daysame

Post-October prices drop. November is a solid value month — crowds have thinned from October’s peak, prices ease, and the experience remains excellent in the first half.

Packing for November

Early November (1–15): Light jacket sufficient for daytime; fleece or mid-weight layer for evenings. Mornings can be cold — 6–10°C in Seoul.

Late November (16–30): Winter coat required in Seoul and northern areas. Busan still manageable in a heavy jacket.

The Short Version

November’s value depends entirely on when you arrive. First two weeks: one of the best times to visit Korea — final autumn foliage, thinner crowds, comfortable temperatures, lower prices than October. Second half: winter, cold, but perfectly manageable with the right gear and an indoor-heavy itinerary. If you can only do one week, arrive the first week of November.
