South Korea in September: Summer Ends, Chuseok Arrives, Foliage Begins

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

September is when Korea exhales. The summer’s humidity breaks, the first mountain foliage appears in the north, and the country gathers for Chuseok — the biggest holiday of the Korean year. Getting the timing right relative to the holiday determines whether September is excellent or chaotic.

Weather in September

Early September: Still warm and occasionally humid. Seoul averages 25–29°C with some lingering monsoon-tail rain in the first two weeks.

Mid-to-late September: The shift. Temperatures drop to a comfortable 20–25°C, humidity falls, and clear blue days dominate. This is when September becomes excellent.

Gangwon Province (mountains): Cooler faster. By late September, the higher elevations of Seoraksan and Odaesan start turning.

Chuseok: Plan Around It

Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month — typically in late September or early October, sometimes in late September, sometimes mid-October. Check the exact date for your travel year.

What happens:

  • 3-day national holiday (the eve, the day, and the day after)
  • Mass domestic travel — Koreans return to family hometowns
  • KTX and express bus tickets sell out 1–2 months ahead
  • Some restaurants and small businesses close for 2–3 days
  • Major attractions may close or reduce hours

What’s good about Chuseok:

  • Gyeongbokgung and other palaces offer free hanbok rental on Chuseok day — wandering the palace grounds in traditional dress with Korean families is memorable
  • Traditional food available everywhere: songpyeon (rice cake), japchae, galbi
  • Templestay programs during Chuseok are available and peaceful

If your dates don’t include Chuseok: September is straightforward and good. Mid-to-late September is particularly excellent.

Seoraksan in Late September

Seoraksan National Park near Sokcho on the east coast sees the first major autumn color change in late September. The rock-and-maple combination at this park is extraordinary.

The peak is typically early-to-mid October, but the late September approach — when the color is just beginning and the summer hikers are gone — is excellent. Trails are open, cable car operational, Sokcho’s seafood market is in autumn form.

Seoul in September

After the summer crowds, Seoul in September is the city at a sustainable pace.

Itaewon and Hannam: The international restaurant and bar district is best in autumn shoulder weather — the nightlife district’s rooftop bars work better in 22°C than 35°C.

Cheonggyecheon Stream: The urban stream that runs through central Seoul is particularly pleasant on September evenings — people sitting along the stepped banks, the city soundtrack overhead.

Gyeongbokgung free hanbok: Entry to the palace is free if you rent a hanbok from the many rental shops near the north gate. September is a good weather window for this — not too hot, not yet cold.

Day Trip: Autumn Gapyeong

The Gapyeong area (north of Seoul on the way to the DMZ) has several destinations that work well in September:

Nami Island: A small river island famous for its tree-lined paths. The Metasequoia tree avenue begins its color change in late September. 1.5 hours from Seoul.

Garden of Morning Calm (Achim-go-yo): A private garden with seasonal gardens in full late-summer flower in September, transitioning to autumn color by month end.

Petite France and the Italian Village: Two theme parks on a hillside over Cheongpyeong Lake. Tourist-y but photogenic in September light.

Budget in September

Mid-season pricing, with Chuseok week as an exception.

CategoryCost
Budget accommodation$25–45/night
Mid-range hotel (Seoul)$65–120/night
Chuseok week (holiday premium)+15–25%
10-day trip budget$1,300–2,200

The Verdict

Late September in Korea (from the 16th onward, ideally) is genuinely excellent — good weather, lower prices than October, first foliage appearing in Seoraksan. The Chuseok variable requires checking dates and booking transport early. Navigate that correctly and September is one of Korea’s best months.
