Climbing Piton des Neiges: Réunion's Highest Summit
Plan your trip
Piton des Neiges (“Peak of Snows”) at 3,069 meters is the highest point in the Indian Ocean — the extinct shield volcano that forms the geological core of Réunion, around which the three cirques (Cilaos, Salazie, Mafate) are formed. The summit is above the cloud layer that typically wraps the cirque walls, giving sunrise views over the entire island and occasionally to Mauritius on clear mornings.
The climb is the most significant hiking objective on the island — accessible to fit hikers without technical climbing skills, but requiring a full day and a night at altitude.
The Two Main Routes
From Cilaos (more popular)
Distance: 14 km return | Elevation gain: 1,650m | Time: 5–7 hours up, 4–5 hours down
Starting from the gîte de montagne near the Cilaos village edge, the trail climbs through tree heather forest, then transitions to the high volcanic plateau with views across to the Piton de la Fournaise. The trail is well-marked and managed by the national park.
The standard approach is to hike up to the Caverne Dufour hut (2,479m) in the afternoon, sleep, then ascend the final section to the summit (590m more elevation) in darkness to arrive for sunrise. The Caverne Dufour hut accommodates 70 people in dormitory-style bunks; advance booking is essential (through the Parc National de la Réunion booking system, €25–35 per person including dinner and breakfast).
From Hell-Bourg (Salazie cirque)
Distance: 18 km return | Elevation gain: 2,150m | Time: 6–8 hours up, 5–6 hours down
A longer, more demanding route with a significantly higher starting point (Hell-Bourg at 930m vs. Cilaos at 1,200m). More solitary than the Cilaos route. The trail passes through the Salazie cirque’s lush vegetation before climbing to the volcanic upper reaches. The same Caverne Dufour hut is the overnight option.
Summit Sunrise Timing
The timing calculation for summit sunrise:
- Target: At the summit by 6 AM for a typical Indian Ocean sunrise at 3,069m
- From Caverne Dufour: 2 hours 30 minutes in darkness (depart hut at 3:30 AM)
- From Cilaos trailhead: 7 hours total (leave by 11 PM if not using hut — not recommended)
Strongly recommended: Use Caverne Dufour as the overnight stop. The 3:30 AM departure in darkness (headlamp required) with cold temperatures at altitude is a significant part of the experience — the summit at dawn, above the cloud layer, with the island visible below, justifies the early hour.
Trail Conditions
Dry season (May–November): Best conditions. Trails are dry and well-defined; the upper volcanic zone has good footing on compacted ash and rock. Clear summit views more likely.
Wet season (December–April): Trails can be muddy in the forested sections; the upper zone can have ice after cold nights (December–July). Cyclone season (January–March) brings risk of trail closures and dangerous summit conditions. Check conditions with the national park before departing.
Snow at the summit: Rare but possible May–October — the name “Piton des Neiges” reflects historical snowfall, though full snow cover is now uncommon with climate change.
What to Bring
Clothing: The summit at 3,069m at 4 AM can be 0–8°C with wind. Bring:
- Insulating mid-layer (fleece or down jacket)
- Windproof outer shell
- Warm hat and gloves (hands feel the cold most in darkness)
- Hiking boots with good ankle support
Navigation: The trail is well-marked but the final section in darkness requires a headlamp with fresh batteries (bring spares). The trail marking is reliable; GPS backup is useful.
Water and food: 2 liters minimum plus snacks for the summit day. The hut provides dinner and breakfast; bring lunch for the descent.
Getting to the Trailhead
Cilaos route: The trailhead is 15 minutes on foot from the Cilaos village center. Cilaos is 60 km from Saint-Denis by car (1.5–2 hours on the cirque road with 400+ hairpin bends). See the Cilaos guide for detail.
Hell-Bourg route: Start from the village directly. Hell-Bourg is 60 km from Saint-Denis.
Practical Notes
- Hut booking: Book Caverne Dufour at least 4–6 weeks in advance through the Parc National de la Réunion (www.reunion-parcnational.fr). Summer school holidays (July–August) book out months ahead
- Fitness level: High — 1,650m elevation gain requires good cardiovascular fitness. Not for sedentary visitors
- Guided option: Guides are available through gîtes and tour operators in Cilaos (€80–120 for a guided summit ascent). Recommended for first-time visitors
- Altitude: At 3,069m, mild altitude effects (headache, mild breathlessness) are possible, especially arriving from sea level. Allow an extra day at Cilaos (1,200m) to acclimatize if possible
