Thailand in May: Rainy Season Begins, Green Season Value, and Ko Samui Still Dry
Plan your trip
May is Thailand’s green season switch — the southwest monsoon arrives on the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Ko Lanta) while the Gulf of Thailand coast (Ko Samui, Ko Phangan, Ko Tao) remains in dry season. This divide is the key to understanding May: the west coast gets wet; the east coast stays clear. Prices fall to annual lows across the board. Bangkok and Chiang Mai get hot and occasionally rainy. For budget-conscious travelers who understand the geography, May is one of the better value months.
The Thailand Coast Split
Thailand’s two major coastlines experience opposite seasons:
| Andaman Coast (West) | Gulf Coast (East) | |
|---|---|---|
| Monsoon | May–October | October–January |
| Dry season | November–April | February–September |
| May conditions | Rainy season beginning | Dry season continuing |
Practical implication: In May, the Gulf coast (Ko Samui, Ko Phangan, Ko Tao) is the correct beach destination. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Ko Phi Phi, Ko Lanta) is entering its rainy season and is not optimal for beach holidays.
Gulf Coast in May — Ko Samui, Ko Phangan, Ko Tao
Ko Tao: May is the beginning of peak diving season on Ko Tao — the Gulf is calm, visibility is excellent, and the island is less crowded than January-February peak. PADI certifications run at maximum value in May — the prices are consistent but the student-to-instructor ratio improves in low season.
Ko Phangan: May is quiet — domestic Thai students are in school, European peak hasn’t arrived, and the island operates at low capacity. The north and west beaches (Haad Salad, Haad Yao, Haad Khuant) are genuinely uncrowded.
Ko Samui: The island’s main beach strip (Chaweng) is at 30–40% of peak capacity. The Bo Phut Fishing Village on the north coast and the Fisherman’s Village night market operate with a local-to-tourist ratio that the island rarely achieves.
Bangkok in May
Bangkok in May gets hot (30–35°C) and the first rains arrive — but the rains are afternoon-only and brief:
- May market season: Chatuchak Weekend Market in May heat requires an early start (8 AM) before the worst of the day
- Visakha Bucha Day: The most sacred Buddhist holiday of the year falls on the full moon of the 6th lunar month (usually May or early June). Thai temples (Wat Arun, Wat Pho, Wat Benchamabophit) run evening candlelit ceremonies — extraordinary to witness.
- Museum season: MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art), Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), and the Siam Museum are all comfortable air-conditioned options for May afternoons
Chiang Mai in May — The Smoke Clears
Chiang Mai in early May often still has residual smoke from the burning season. By mid-to-late May, the first rains arrive and clear the air — visibility returns, Doi Suthep becomes visible again, and the northern mountains turn green. May is the transition for the north: worse than March smoke-wise in the first half, dramatically improving in the second half.
First rains in Chiang Mai (typically mid-May): The relief is dramatic — temperatures drop slightly, the mountains reappear through clear air, and the green season begins. The hill tribe villages and mountain trekking trails are at their most lush from late May onward.
Phuket and Andaman Coast in May
The Andaman coast monsoon arrives in May — this doesn’t mean constant rain, but:
- Afternoon and evening rain is common
- Sea conditions deteriorate — waves, reduced visibility for diving
- The Similan Islands close May 15 (they reopen November 1)
- Phi Phi Islands are accessible but beach conditions are variable
- Phuket in May: Hotels drop to minimum pricing. Kamala and Surin beaches on the west coast have surfable waves in May — the Andaman gets waves almost exclusively in rainy season.
Budget in May
| Category | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (Gulf coast) | $15–$40/night | $55–$140/night |
| Accommodation (Phuket, low season) | $20–$50/night | $60–$150/night |
| Accommodation (Bangkok) | $12–$35/night | $50–$120/night |
| Meals (street food) | $1–$3/meal | $8–$22/meal |
Annual minimum pricing beginning in May. Gulf coast properties that were $80–$150 in January drop to $20–$50 in May. Phuket 5-star hotels price at 40–60% below peak. Bangkok budget guesthouses are at their cheapest.
Practical Notes
- Monsoon on the Andaman: Not all rain all day — typically afternoon/evening showers. Morning beach time on the Andaman coast in May is often still possible.
- Boat services: Some inter-island boat services on the Andaman coast run reduced schedules in May due to sea conditions.
- Ko Tao diving: Gulf coast diving conditions in May are excellent — the reversed monsoon means the Gulf is calmer when the Andaman is rough.
The Short Version
May’s key is geography: go east (Gulf coast) not west (Andaman). Ko Tao for diving, Ko Phangan and Ko Samui for beaches — all at the lowest prices of the year. Bangkok is workable with air-conditioned midday strategy. Chiang Mai improves through the month as smoke clears. Phuket and Krabi are for surfers or budget travelers who want luxury infrastructure at minimum cost and don’t mind weather variability.
