Greenland in May: Hiking Season Opens, Midnight Sun Approaches, and Icebergs Move

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

May opens Greenland’s summer. The sea ice has retreated from most harbor areas, the hiking trails are becoming accessible as snow recedes from lower elevations, and the daylight stretches to 18–20 hours by month end. The icebergs in Disko Bay are moving freely — massive ice formations drifting through open water, calved from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. Boat tours are operating from Ilulissat. The Arctic Circle Trail from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut is walkable in late May (though the passes still carry snow). May is the start of real summer access without July and August crowds.

Weather & Conditions

Ilulissat (Disko Bay): 2 to -4°C. Sea ice gone from harbor. Icebergs moving freely.

Nuuk: 4 to -2°C. Snowmelt ongoing. Lower trails open.

Sisimiut: 2 to -5°C. Town accessible. Arctic Circle Trail beginning.

South Greenland: 6 to 2°C. Mildest conditions in Greenland. Sheep grazing begins.

Kangerlussuaq: 4 to -6°C. Still significant snow in passes.

What to Do

Arctic Circle Trail — late May start: The 165km Arctic Circle Trail from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut is one of the world’s great wilderness hikes — 9 days through Arctic tundra, across rivers, and over mountain passes with no roads, no services, and some of the most dramatic unpeopled landscape on earth. Late May is the earliest start — the snow in the high passes has retreated enough for navigation. The trail has no huts (three emergency shelters only), requires full wilderness kit, and demands river crossing ability. Allow 8–10 days and plan for weather.

Ilulissat iceberg boat tours: May boat tours into the Ilulissat Icefjord are running regularly. The ice architecture of Disko Bay in May — icebergs the size of buildings moving through dark fjord water, with the still snow-covered mountains behind — is extraordinary. Tour operators include World of Greenland and Ilulissat-based operators. Half-day boat excursions cost DKK 400–600.

Nuuk hiking — fjord trails: Nuuk’s fjord trail system opens in May. The Quassussuaq (Store Malene) peak above Nuuk (788m) is accessible by May and gives a panoramic view of the fjord, the city, and the sea ice remnants. The hike takes 4–5 hours round trip.

South Greenland Norse ruins: May is an excellent month for south Greenland. The Hvalsey Church ruins, the Brattahlíð (Erik the Red’s farm) site near Narsarsuaq, and the Narsaq farming district are all accessible. South Greenland receives very few visitors compared to Ilulissat and the north. The combination of Norse history, sheep farms, and fjord scenery gives it a character unlike the rest of Greenland.

Whale watching — season building: May sees increasing whale activity in Disko Bay. Humpback, fin, and minke whales are arriving in growing numbers. The May whale watching season is reliable for Disko Bay operators.

Festivals & Events

National Day buildup: Greenland’s National Day is June 21 (Ulloriarsuaq). May cultural events build toward the celebration.

Fishing season opening: The halibut and cod fishing season begins in May, which drives the economy of the small settlements around Disko Bay and the south. Visitors attached to fishing-focused operators can join commercial or sport fishing excursions.

Practical Tips

Arctic Circle Trail May: the trail requires proper expedition preparation. River crossings can be deep in May snowmelt — trekking poles and waterproof boots are essential. The rivers in mid-trail can be knee-to-waist deep in high snowmelt years. Research conditions through the Sisimiut tourist office before departure.

Ilulissat boat tours: book 2–3 weeks ahead in May. The season is building but not yet at summer peak demand.

Weather in May: highly variable. Clear days with bright Arctic light alternate with fog, rain, and occasionally snow. Pack rain gear and layers regardless of the forecast.

Accommodation in Ilulissat: the main hotels (Hotel Arctic, Hotel Hvide Falk) should be booked 4–6 weeks ahead for May. Guesthouse accommodation is more available.

Who May Is For

Early-season hikers who want the Arctic Circle Trail with minimal crowds. Iceberg viewers before June and July peak. South Greenland Norse history visitors. Whale watchers building the season. And travelers who specifically want access without the full July tourist volumes — May delivers most of Greenland’s summer experiences at lower prices and quieter conditions.
