Greenland in June: Midnight Sun, National Day, and Peak Iceberg Season
Plan your trip
June is Greenland at its most dramatic. The midnight sun arrives for the summer solstice — above the Arctic Circle, the sun circles the sky without setting. In Ilulissat (69°N), the midnight sun runs from late May through mid-July. The Ilulissat Icefjord reaches peak iceberg volume, with the largest icebergs of the year moving through Disko Bay. Greenland’s National Day on June 21 (Ulloriarsuaq, “the great day”) fills Nuuk with celebrations, traditional dress, and community events. June is when Greenland is fully open, at its most visually extraordinary, and still below the July tourist peak.
Weather & Conditions
Ilulissat (Disko Bay): 5 to 10°C. Midnight sun from late May. Icebergs at maximum volume.
Nuuk: 6 to 12°C. Long days. National Day celebrations.
Sisimiut: 5 to 10°C. Arctic Circle Trail in prime condition.
South Greenland: 8 to 15°C. Warmest in Greenland. Sheep grazing in full swing.
East Greenland (Tasiilaq): 4 to 8°C. Sea ice still present in some fjords.
What to Do
Midnight sun experience, Ilulissat: At 69°N, the sun does not set from May 25 to July 24. June is the center of this period. The disorienting experience of 24-hour daylight — hiking at 11pm, reading outside at 2am, photographing icebergs at midnight — is unlike any other sensory experience in travel. The quality of midnight light in Ilulissat (the sun low on the northern horizon, casting a continuous golden-orange wash over white icebergs and dark water) is extraordinary.
Ilulissat Icefjord peak iceberg season: June is the peak month for iceberg scale in Disko Bay. The Sermeq Kujalleq glacier calves continuously, and the largest icebergs from earlier months have accumulated in the fjord. Boat tours get close to formations that are 80–100m tall — cathedrals of blue-white ice that dwarf the boats. The helicopter tour over the icefjord gives perspective on the scale that’s impossible from the water.
Greenland National Day (June 21): Ulloriarsuaq is Greenland’s most important national celebration. Nuuk’s harbor area fills with Greenlandic national dress (the women’s beaded national costume is extraordinary), traditional songs and dances, competitive kayaking, and community events. Restaurants serve traditional Greenlandic food. The cultural character of the day — pride in Greenlandic identity within the Danish kingdom — gives June 21 a particular weight.
Arctic Circle Trail hike: June is the prime month for the Arctic Circle Trail from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut. Snow has receded from the passes, the rivers are running but not in flood, and the tundra is blooming. The 165km trail takes 8–10 days through unpeopled Arctic landscape. This is one of the world’s genuinely extraordinary long hikes — no facilities, no other trails, just tundra, rivers, and sky.
Kayaking, Nuuk fjord: Sea kayaking in the Nuuk fjord system gives access to the intricate coastline, potential whale encounters, and perspectives on the icebergs that drift south from Disko Bay. Operators in Nuuk run guided kayaking from half-day to multi-day.
Festivals & Events
Greenland National Day (June 21): The primary national celebration. Events across all settlements; Nuuk has the largest celebration.
Midsummer: The solstice (June 20–21) is the astronomical peak of the midnight sun. In Ilulissat, the sun reaches its northernmost point and begins technically trending south — though the midnight sun continues until late July.
Practical Tips
Midnight sun and sleep: 24-hour daylight is disorienting. Bring a sleep mask. Quality hotels (Hotel Arctic in Ilulissat) have blackout curtains. Budget accommodation may not. Confirm before booking.
Ilulissat June: the most in-demand month at the most in-demand destination. Book Hotel Arctic or Hotel Hvide Falk 3–4 months ahead. Boat tour spots for the icefjord also book ahead in June.
National Day accommodation in Nuuk: June 20–21 accommodation in Nuuk is limited. Book 6–8 weeks ahead.
Arctic Circle Trail: register with the Sisimiut tourist office before starting. Emergency satellite communicators are recommended. The trail has no mobile coverage for most of its length.
Who June Is For
Midnight sun experience travelers. Iceberg peak season visitors. National Day cultural participants. Arctic Circle Trail hikers at prime conditions. Kayakers. And anyone who wants Greenland fully open, at its most dramatic, with slightly less competition than July.
