Best Time to Visit Tanzania: Month-by-Month Safari Guide

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

Tanzania’s safari season is shaped by two rainy seasons — the long rains (March–May) and short rains (November). The Great Migration follows a predictable annual clockwise loop around the Serengeti. Understanding both is the key to planning.

The Short Answer

Best overall: June–October (dry season)
Best for river crossings (most dramatic): July–October (northern Serengeti)
Best for calving season: January–March (southern Serengeti)
Best value: November and March
Avoid (most parks): April–May (long rains — roads flooded, many camps closed)

The Great Migration Calendar

The wildebeest migration (1.5 million animals) moves in a clockwise circuit around the Serengeti ecosystem — following the rain and fresh grass.

MonthMigration LocationWhat’s Happening
December–MarchSouthern Serengeti / Ndutu areaCalving season — 500,000 wildebeest born in 3 weeks
April–MayCentral SerengetiLong rains; migration dispersed
June–JulyWestern Serengeti (Grumeti)Grumeti River crossings
August–OctoberNorthern Serengeti (Mara River)Mara River crossings — most dramatic
NovemberSouthern movement beginsShort rains; migration returns south

Month-by-Month

January ⭐ (calving season)

Southern Serengeti/Ndutu: Calving season peak — hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves born. This attracts enormous concentrations of predators (cheetahs, lions, hyenas, wild dogs). One of the year’s most dramatic wildlife moments. Zanzibar: Hot and humid but generally sunny (northeast monsoon season). Good beach weather.

February ⭐ (calving continues)

Calving season continues. Short dry spell makes roads accessible. Excellent photography light — clear sky after the short rains, green grass, and predators hunting calves.

March–May — Mostly Avoid

Long rains arrive in March. By April–May, roads in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro can flood. Many smaller camps close. Wildlife is present but harder to find in dense vegetation. Not recommended for first-time safari visitors. Significant discounts available (30–50% off).

June ⭐⭐ Excellent (dry season begins)

Long rains end. Vegetation drying out — animals concentrate around water. Grumeti River crossings begin in the western Serengeti. Excellent conditions throughout the Northern Circuit. Prices rising toward peak.

July ⭐⭐ Peak Season

Prime time. Northern Serengeti Mara River crossings beginning. Wildebeest numbers building on the north bank of the Mara. Wildlife visibility excellent (short dry grass). Ngorongoro Crater black rhino most reliably sighted. Highest prices; camps full.

August ⭐⭐ Peak Season

Mara River crossing season peak — up to 20 crossings per day possible during peak flow. The most dramatic wildlife spectacle in the world — wildebeest and zebra plunge into crocodile-filled water in waves of thousands. Book 12 months ahead for camps near the northern Mara.

September ⭐⭐ Excellent

Migration still in the north. Slightly fewer tourists than August. Excellent game throughout Northern Circuit. Ideal combination of wildlife and value.

October ⭐ Good

Migration beginning to drift south. Some camps drop prices. Still excellent game viewing throughout the Serengeti. Ruaha and Selous are excellent — dry, rivers low, wildlife concentrated.

November

Short rains arrive (usually 2–4 weeks, less intense than long rains). Some road softening. Prices drop. Zanzibar’s ocean cools and whale sharks pass through waters north of the island.

December ⭐ (shoulder/festivities)

Short rains ending. Migration back in southern Serengeti. Excellent conditions re-establishing. Christmas and New Year are busy and expensive in top camps. Zanzibar beach season beginning.
