Tanzania in December: Zanzibar Peak Season, Pre-Calving Serengeti, Christmas Safari

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

December brings Tanzania’s most glamorous safari and beach season. The northeast trade wind (kaskazi) is fully established on Zanzibar’s east coast — warm, clear waters, blue skies, and the famous white sand beaches at their finest. The Serengeti is filling with wildebeest returning to the Southern Serengeti ahead of January calving. Christmas and New Year safaris attract high-end travelers paying premium rates for extraordinary experiences. Tanzania in December is both excellent and expensive.

Weather & Conditions

Southern Serengeti (Ndutu area): Short rains may still occur in early December but typically ease by mid-month. The plains are green and filling with wildebeest.

Serengeti general: Dry December by the second half of the month. Good game viewing conditions.

Ngorongoro: Clear and excellent.

Zanzibar: Northeast trade wind (kaskazi) fully established. East coast (Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi) is in prime season. Water temperature 27–29°C. Minimal rain.

Mount Kilimanjaro: December is actually a decent climbing month — the short rains ease and the mountain clears. Not as reliable as July–August but workable.

What to Do

Zanzibar east coast (Paje, Jambiani, Nungwi): December through February is Zanzibar’s east coast peak season. The northeast trade wind creates consistent waves for surfing (small reef break at Paje), excellent conditions for snorkeling, and the constant breeze keeps the heat comfortable. Mnemba Atoll — a private marine sanctuary off the northeast tip — has turtle nesting season in full operation. Snorkeling from the sandbar can include green and hawksbill turtle encounters.

Serengeti calving preparation (Ndutu area): By late December, the wildebeest are concentrated in the Southern Serengeti ahead of January–March calving. Ndutu camps in December offer excellent value compared to February peak, with the pre-calving drama of a landscape filling with pregnant animals and attentive predators.

Ngorongoro Christmas: One of the world’s most spectacular natural settings for the Christmas period. The crater at Christmas — with cool clear air, morning mist dissolving to reveal thousands of animals, and the silence of the crater rim at dawn — is an extraordinary holiday experience.

Kilimanjaro Christmas climb: A small but consistent tradition of Christmas week Kilimanjaro summits has developed. The summit on Christmas morning is a specific goal for some climbers. Operators run Christmas-themed itineraries. Book 4–6 months ahead.

Stonetown New Year’s Eve: Zanzibar’s Stonetown runs New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Old Fort with live music, dancing, and a genuinely cosmopolitan crowd. The fusion of Arabic, African, and Indian influences in Stonetown’s culture makes New Year’s here distinctly different from anywhere else in East Africa.

Festivals & Events

Christmas (December 25): Tanzania has a significant Christian population. Christmas services in Arusha, Moshi, and Dar es Salaam. Safari camps run Christmas dinner events.

New Year’s Eve: Zanzibar Stonetown is the definitive Tanzania New Year’s destination.

Practical Tips

December 20 – January 5: the highest-demand window in Tanzania’s tourism year. Safari camps charge their Christmas/New Year supplement rates — often the highest of the year, 20–30% above standard high season. Book 6 months ahead.

Zanzibar December accommodation: east coast properties in Paje and Jambiani book out for Christmas week by July or August. North coast properties (Nungwi, Kendwa) are marginally easier but still require advance booking.

Calving season camps around Ndutu for January: if December is your departure point, book Ndutu January camps before leaving home.

Who December Is For

Christmas and New Year travelers who want an extraordinary setting for the holiday. First-time Tanzania visitors whose travel window is school holiday season. Zanzibar beach lovers who want the peak east coast season with festive atmosphere. Budget is not the consideration — December is about the experience, at full price.
