Tanzania Safari Budget: How Much Does Tanzania Actually Cost?
Plan your trip
Tanzania is not a budget destination — safari travel in general carries high costs for park fees, guides, and camp infrastructure. But it can be done across a range of budgets, from camping safaris to ultra-luxury tented camps, and the wildlife experience is priceless at any level.
Quick Summary
| Style | Daily Budget (per person) |
|---|---|
| Budget camping safari | €80–140/day |
| Mid-range lodge safari | €200–350/day |
| Luxury tented camp | €500–1,200/day |
| Ultra-luxury (private conservancy) | €1,000–3,000+/day |
These are all-inclusive figures for organised safari packages (accommodation, meals, game drives, guide, park fees). Zanzibar is priced separately and is significantly cheaper.
Understanding Safari Costs
Safari costs in Tanzania are high because of genuinely high underlying costs:
Conservation fees: Tanzania National Park fees for foreigners are $70/24h in the Serengeti, $70 in Ngorongoro. A 3-day Serengeti trip generates $210/person in park fees before any other costs.
Guide costs: Professional safari guides with tracker vehicles command $200–400/day.
Camp infrastructure: Running a remote tented camp in the Serengeti with solar power, chef, and housekeeping in a location hours from supplies is genuinely expensive.
VAT: 18% VAT on all tourist services in Tanzania.
This is why safaris cost what they cost. The value is real — quality guides, extraordinary wildlife access, and all-inclusive comfort in remote locations.
Budget Breakdown
Camping Safaris (Budget)
Group camping safaris using national park campsites and shared 4WD vehicles: €100–180/person/day for a 7-day package from Arusha (all inclusive). Accommodation is dome tents; meals are prepared by the camp cook; groups of 4–8 share a vehicle.
This is genuinely affordable safari and the wildlife experience is identical to luxury — the same animals, the same landscapes. What differs is the camp quality.
Mid-Range Lodge Safaris
Private en-suite accommodation in established lodges (e.g., Serena Hotels, Sopa Lodges): €250–450/person/day all inclusive. Share vehicle with maximum 6 passengers. Good food, comfortable beds, private bathrooms.
Luxury Tented Camps
Premium tented camps with private guides and 4WD, maximum 8 guests, exclusive game-drive areas, high-end cuisine: €600–1,200/person/day. These are the camps you see in magazine spreads — Four Seasons Serengeti, Singita, &Beyond.
Zanzibar Costs (Separate)
Zanzibar is dramatically cheaper than mainland safari Tanzania.
Accommodation:
- Budget guesthouses in Stone Town: €25–50/night
- Mid-range beach hotels: €80–150/night
- Luxury beach resorts (Melia Zanzibar, Park Hyatt): €200–500/night
Food:
- Street food (Forodhani Gardens): €1–4 per item
- Local restaurants: €5–15/person
- Resort restaurants: €30–60/person
Activities:
- Spice tour: €20–30
- Stone Town walking tour: €20–40
- Snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll: €60–80 (boat + guide)
- Scuba diving: €50–80/dive
- Dolphin tour: €25–40
Kilimanjaro Climbing Costs
All routes: $1,200–2,500 per person for a 6–8 day climb, depending on route and operator. This includes mandatory guide, porters (Porter’s Charter requires a minimum number), park fees ($820 for 8 days), accommodation (huts on Marangu route; tents on Machame and others), and meals.
Not a budget climb: Tanzania prohibits solo climbing. Porters and guides are mandatory, and the regulations are strictly enforced.

Money-Saving Tips
- Travel in a group of 4: The fixed costs of a vehicle and guide are split 4 ways, cutting the per-person cost significantly
- Green season (March–May): 30–50% discounts at many lodges. Wildlife is still present; roads can be difficult
- Book in advance: The best camp-and-game combination packages at mid-range prices sell out 6–12 months ahead for peak season
- Combine with Zanzibar: Zanzibar’s relative affordability balances the safari costs; 4 nights in Stone Town and on the beach adds enormous value at reasonable cost
- Tipping: Expect to tip guides ($15–20/day), porters ($10–15/day for Kilimanjaro), and camp staff ($5–10/day). Budget this separately.
