Thailand Travel Budget: How Much Does Thailand Actually Cost?

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

Thailand has long been one of the world’s great value destinations. You can eat exceptionally well, stay comfortably, and experience extraordinary culture and nature for a fraction of European costs. But costs have risen in Bangkok and island resorts — this guide reflects current prices.

Quick Summary

StyleDaily Budget (per person)
Budget backpacker€25–40/day
Mid-range traveller€60–100/day
Comfort traveller€130–200/day
Luxury resort€250–500+/day

Accommodation

Budget hostels: €8–18/night in dorms; €20–40 for private rooms. Bangkok and Chiang Mai have excellent hostel scenes. Islands run €15–30 for basic beach bungalows.

Guesthouses: €25–50/night for clean, comfortable rooms with air-con. Excellent value in Chiang Mai and Bangkok’s backpacker districts.

Mid-range hotels: €50–100/night. Good quality throughout Thailand — pool, air-con, breakfast, often in excellent locations.

Luxury resorts: Thailand has world-class luxury accommodation at lower prices than equivalent properties elsewhere. Bangkok’s top hotels (Mandarin Oriental, Peninsula) run €300–600/night. Koh Samui beach resort luxury runs €150–400.

Island bungalows: A spectrum from basic bamboo huts (€10–20) to excellent boutique bungalows (€50–100). The atmosphere often outweighs the facilities.

Food

Thailand’s street food is one of the world’s great cuisines and it’s extraordinarily cheap.

Street food stall: €0.80–2 per dish. Pad thai, som tum (papaya salad), khao man gai (poached chicken on rice), boat noodles. A complete street food meal costs €2–4.

Local restaurant (khao rad gang — rice and curry): €1.50–3 for a plate with rice and two or three curry/stir-fry choices.

Mid-range restaurant: €6–15/person. Thai restaurants aimed at locals and tourists — consistent, good quality.

Fine dining: Bangkok has several world-ranked restaurants. A tasting menu at Gaggan (ranked globally) runs €80–120. Nahm, Bo.Lan, and Nahm are comparable. Extraordinary food at a fraction of London or New York fine dining prices.

Chang beer (large bottle): €2–3 at a restaurant, €1.50 at a 7-Eleven.

Fresh coconut: €0.80–1.50 from street stalls. Everywhere.

7-Eleven: A national institution. Open 24 hours everywhere. Good for snacks, cheap meals, water, and ice coffee.

Transport

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to city: BTS train to Phaya Thai (45 min, €3), taxi (€12–18 metered + expressway tolls), Grab (€8–14 depending on traffic).

BTS Skytrain / MRT (Bangkok): €0.60–1.80 per trip depending on distance. Rabbit Card or stored-value card reduces fares. One-day pass: €5.50.

Grab (Thai Uber): Reliable metered pricing. Bangkok airport to city centre: €10–15.

Intercity bus: €5–15 for most routes. VIP buses (reclining seats, air-con) are comfortable. Bangkok–Chiang Mai: €12–18 overnight bus.

Train (Bangkok–Chiang Mai overnight): €15–30 for a sleeper berth. Slower than the bus (13 hours) but atmospheric and comfortable.

Domestic flights: AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air. Bangkok–Chiang Mai: €20–50. Bangkok–Phuket: €20–60. Book 3–6 weeks ahead for lowest prices.

Island ferries: Koh Samui–Koh Phangan: €8–12. Krabi–Koh Lanta: €10–15. Phuket–Phi Phi: €12–18.

Tuk-tuk: Negotiate before getting in. Short Bangkok hops: €1.50–4. Fun experience; not the most economical.

Scooter rental (Chiang Mai, islands): €5–10/day. Freedom to explore; drive carefully.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 7-Eleven and local markets for breakfast — excellent Thai pastries and sandwiches for €1
  • Street food over restaurants — the food is often better and costs 10x less
  • BTS day pass in Bangkok rather than metered taxis
  • Book domestic flights 4–6 weeks ahead — AirAsia prices are excellent with advance notice
  • Shoulder season (May, October, November) brings 30–50% lower accommodation prices, especially on the islands
  • Free temples: Many temples outside the main tourist circuit are free. Chiang Mai alone has 300+ temples; only the most-visited charge admission
