Best Time to Visit Costa Rica: Month-by-Month Guide
Plan your trip
Costa Rica’s two coasts operate on opposite weather patterns — when the Pacific is dry, the Caribbean is getting more rain, and vice versa. Understanding this split is the key to planning a great trip.
The Short Answer
Best for Pacific Coast: December–April (dry season)
Best for Caribbean Coast: March–September (drier on this side)
Best for Monteverde Cloud Forest: January–May
Best for Turtle Watching (Tortuguero): July–October (green turtles)
Best value: May–June and September–November (green/shoulder season)
Avoid: September–October (wettest on Pacific coast)
The Two Seasons
Dry Season (Verano) — December to April
The classic tourist season on the Pacific coast. Blue skies, minimal rain, hot temperatures (28–34°C at sea level). All outdoor activities run reliably. Peak prices and crowds December–January and during Easter week.
Guanacaste and the Pacific north can get very dry and dusty by March–April. Forest is less lush; rivers lower.
Green Season (Invierno) — May to November
Despite being called “winter,” it’s not cold — it just rains. Usually afternoons and evenings rather than all day. The landscape turns spectacularly green, waterfalls are at maximum flow, and wildlife viewing is excellent (animals are more active in cooler, wetter conditions).
Prices are 20–40% lower. Fewer tourists. The authentic Costa Rica that locals experience. Many argue May–June is actually the best time to visit — rains haven’t peaked, green is fresh, costs are low.
Month-by-Month
December ⭐⭐ (Pacific) / Good (Caribbean)
Peak season beginning on the Pacific. Schools out worldwide — Christmas and New Year are the most expensive 2 weeks. Book months ahead. Weather excellent on the Pacific. Caribbean has its short dry season (December–January can be relatively dry).
January ⭐⭐ (Pacific)
Excellent dry season weather on the Pacific. Prices slightly lower than December after the holiday peak. Good time for Guanacaste beaches, Manuel Antonio, and Osa Peninsula.
February ⭐⭐ (Pacific)
Height of dry season — consistently clear. Monteverde’s cloud forest is at its best for quetzal sightings (February–May). Sea turtle season beginning at Ostional (olive ridley turtles). Very popular; book ahead.
March ⭐ (Pacific) + Caribbean opens
Pacific dry season continues. Caribbean coast starts its better period (March–September is the drier half of the year on the Caribbean side). Easter week is extremely busy and expensive — avoid if possible (Ticos travel domestically en masse).
April ⭐
Transition month. Late dry season on the Pacific — vegetation drying and dusty in Guanacaste. Excellent for Manuel Antonio and southern Pacific. Good Caribbean.
May ⭐ (value)
Green season begins. Prices drop 20–30%. Landscapes turn lush. First rains usually afternoons only. Excellent value month — good conditions with much lower costs. Osa Peninsula and Corcovado are excellent (park less crowded).
June–July ⭐ (Caribbean + Tortuguero)
Green season on the Pacific (afternoon rains; mornings often clear). Caribbean coast — September–October rainy peak still ahead; July relatively good. Tortuguero green sea turtle nesting starts (July) — the peak wildlife experience of the year. Book guided turtle watches well ahead.
August–September (Tortuguero peak)
Tortuguero peak season for green sea turtle nesting — the best month for watching turtles nest under stars. Pacific coast is wet. Many activities still operate (zip lines, hot springs, tours) — rain doesn’t stop everything.
October
Wettest month on the Pacific coast — heavy, prolonged rain possible. Some lodges and roads difficult. Not recommended for Pacific beach holidays. Caribbean coast can also be wet October–November.
November ⭐ (value)
Pacific rain decreasing. Transition back to dry season. Low prices and fewer tourists. Humpback whales off the Osa Peninsula (September–March). Good for wildlife-focused trips.
