Malaysia in October: East Coast Closes, Langkawi Opens, and Deepavali Lights Up KL

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

October is Malaysia’s seasonal switchover month. The east coast’s beach season is ending as the northeast monsoon approaches — the Perhentian Islands close in October or November. Meanwhile, the west coast (Langkawi, Penang) is opening for its finest season as the southwest monsoon departs. And Deepavali — the Hindu festival of lights — fills Kuala Lumpur’s Brickfields neighborhood and Penang’s Sri Mahamariamman Temple precinct with lamps, flowers, and celebration.

Weather & Conditions

East Coast: Transitioning. October may have good early-month conditions but the monsoon is approaching. By late October, conditions begin deteriorating.

Langkawi: Improving rapidly. The southwest monsoon is ending. Late October sees clear days returning.

Penang: Improving. October is when the west coast starts its best season.

Kuala Lumpur: 25–32°C. Hot and humid.

Sabah: 24–32°C. Generally good. Kinabalu and wildlife accessible.

What to Do

Deepavali in Little India (Brickfields, KL, and Penang): The Festival of Lights is one of Malaysia’s most visually beautiful celebrations. The streets of Brickfields in KL are strung with oil lamps and lights from weeks beforehand. The Sri Mahamariamman Temple on Jalan Travers is surrounded by flower garlands. Open house invitations are extended to all ethnicities. Penang’s Indian community in Georgetown’s Little India runs similar celebrations.

Langkawi — season opening: October’s improving conditions make Langkawi accessible again. By late October, the beaches (Pantai Cenang, Pantai Kok) are clearing and the dive visibility at Pulau Payar Marine Park is improving. Hotels offer competitive rates in the opening weeks before peak November pricing.

George Town food culture (Penang): The west coast’s improving October weather makes Georgetown’s walking food tour excellent. The Penang hawker centres — Gurney Drive Night Market, the Lorong Selamat char kway teow specialist, and the dim sum heritage of the Chinese quarter — are among Southeast Asia’s finest.

Kinabalu National Park, Sabah: October is a good month for Kinabalu. The mountain’s climate is independent of the coasts; October is within the drier period for highland Sabah. Book summit permits 2–3 months ahead.

Melaka and historical Malaysia: The UNESCO World Heritage port city of Melaka is a year-round destination. October’s manageable temperatures (30–32°C) make the heritage walk — Stadthuys, A Famosa, the Baba-Nyonya (Peranakan) heritage museum, the Jonker Street night market — comfortable.

Festivals & Events

Deepavali (variable October or November, by Hindu calendar): Malaysia’s Hindu Tamil community’s most important festival.

Mid-Autumn Festival (if in October): Mooncake giving and lantern processions in the Chinese community.

Practical Tips

East coast October: the Perhentian Islands’ closing date is determined by the weather, not a calendar — sometimes late October, sometimes November. Check current status with resorts.

Langkawi October early season: book 3–4 weeks ahead for late-October stays. The season opening creates demand from regular visitors.

Deepavali dates: vary by Tamil Hindu calendar. Check the specific year’s date — it falls in different weeks of October–November annually.

Who October Is For

Deepavali cultural observers. West coast beach travelers catching Langkawi’s opening season. Penang food culture visitors. Kinabalu climbers. And seasonal strategists who know that switching from east to west coast in October gives you the best of both halves of Malaysia’s geographic split.
