Malaysia in November: Langkawi Peak Season Opens, East Coast Closes, and West Coast Shines
Plan your trip
November is when Malaysia’s geographic advantage becomes most apparent. The east coast beaches are now under monsoon (the Perhentians have closed) while Langkawi and the Andaman coast enter their finest season. The northeast monsoon that devastates the South China Sea coast creates dry, clear conditions on the Andaman side. Langkawi in November is consistently excellent — warm, dry, and clear.
Weather & Conditions
Langkawi: 26–32°C. Dry and excellent. The northeast trade wind creates ideal beach conditions.
Penang: 26–32°C. Good conditions. The west coast is in its better season.
East Coast (Perhentian, Tioman): Monsoon in force. Closed.
Kuala Lumpur: 25–32°C. Hot and humid. Some rain.
Sabah: 24–30°C. Generally good.
Cameron Highlands: 18–24°C. Cool. Rain possible but manageable.
What to Do
Langkawi — prime beach season: November is Langkawi’s best month. The Pantai Cenang beach is clean, clear, and not yet at Christmas peak pricing. Snorkeling at Pulau Payar Marine Park is excellent — visibility 15–25m. The Langkawi Sky Bridge (a curved pedestrian bridge over the jungle canopy at 700m altitude, accessible by cable car) is visually extraordinary in clear November conditions. Mangrove kayaking through the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park is excellent.
Georgetown Penang food and heritage: November is Penang’s best weather for street exploration. The UNESCO George Town heritage zone — shophouses, clan temples, and Indian mosques — is comfortable to walk. The Penang Botanic Gardens (Botanic Garden Road) are excellent in the cool mornings. The Penang Hill funicular to 830m gives panoramic views over Georgetown, the channel, and Kedah.
Deepavali (if November — variable): When Deepavali falls in November, the October description applies: Brickfields in KL is the epicenter.
Kinabalu and Sabah (Borneo): November is within Sabah’s drier season. The Kinabalu summit climb, the Kinabatangan River wildlife safari, and the Danum Valley are all excellent.
Kuala Lumpur’s cultural circuit: The Islamic Arts Museum, National Museum, and the Petronas Towers skybridge are year-round KL experiences that November’s comfortable evenings make particularly enjoyable.
Festivals & Events
Deepavali (if November): The Hindu Festival of Lights.
Hari Raya Aidiladha (if in November): The second Eid celebration — dates vary.
Practical Tips
Langkawi November accommodation: the season is opening and demand is building. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for any beachfront resort. Prices are below December peak levels.
East coast is entirely closed in November. Any planning for Perhentian or Tioman should target March–October.
Cameron Highlands in November has school holiday pressure on some weekends. Weekday visits are more relaxed.
Who November Is For
Langkawi beach travelers catching the season opening before Christmas prices. Penang food and heritage explorers. Deepavali cultural visitors. Borneo wildlife travelers. And experienced Southeast Asia travelers who understand that November’s geographic advantages make it ideal for the west coast while the east coast sleeps.
