Best Time to Visit Pakistan: Month-by-Month Guide

By GoinAtlas Editorial Team · Updated May 2026

Pakistan’s geography creates wildly different climate zones simultaneously. When Lahore is a pleasant 25°C in March, the Karakoram passes are buried under metres of snow. When Hunza is lush and perfect in July, Lahore is hitting 44°C. Planning around these extremes is essential.

The Short Answer

Best for Hunza & KKH: May–September
Best for Lahore & Punjab cities: February–April and October–November
Best for Swat Valley: April–October
Avoid (north): November–April (passes closed, snow)
Avoid (Lahore/Punjab): June–August (extreme heat, 40–48°C)

Month-by-Month

January & February

Lahore/Punjab: Cool and pleasant (10–22°C) with some fog. The Basant kite festival (traditionally February, now sometimes restricted). Cultural events and food season. North (Hunza/KKH): Snow-covered, passes closed, deeply cold (-10 to 5°C). Not accessible. Islamabad: Foggy winter mornings, pleasant afternoons (12–22°C). Manageable.

March ⭐ (Lahore/Punjab)

One of the best months for visiting Lahore, Islamabad, and the historic sites of Punjab. Temperature 15–28°C. Spring flowers blooming. Nowruz (Persian New Year, March 21) is celebrated in the north by Ismaili communities. Mountains: Still closed. Gilgit might be accessible by air.

April ⭐ (Lahore + mountains opening)

Excellent in Lahore (20–35°C — warming up but manageable). Mountains beginning to open — Gilgit accessible, Hunza possible by late April as roads clear.

May ⭐ (transition + north opens)

Lahore getting hot (32–42°C). Karakoram Highway fully open — Hunza, Gojal, and approaches to Khunjerab accessible. Fairy Meadows hike begins.

June–August — North is PEAK, Punjab is AVOID

North (Hunza, KKH, Fairy Meadows): The very best time. Green apricot orchards, clear mountain air, 20–28°C in the valleys. Wildflowers at altitude. All routes open including Khunjerab Pass. Lahore/Punjab: 40–48°C heat. Genuinely dangerous. Not recommended for sightseeing.

September ⭐⭐ Best overall month

North: Still excellent — slightly cooler (15–25°C in valleys), autumn colours beginning in September-October. Apricots harvested and drying on rooftops. Less crowded than July–August. Lahore: Temperatures beginning to fall (35–40°C in September — still hot but dropping).

October ⭐ (excellent for both)

North: Best autumn colours in Hunza — golden poplars, red willows. Crisp, clear, 10–20°C. Passes beginning to close by late October. Lahore/Punjab: 22–33°C — ideal. One of the best months for the historic cities.

November

North: Passes closing. Hunza accessible until mid-November. Cold at night. Lahore/Punjab: 15–26°C — excellent. The best cultural and food season.

December

North: Winter. Not recommended. Lahore: Cool (8–22°C), festive (Christmas celebrated by Christian community), and pleasant.

The Karakoram Highway Season

The KKH is officially open May–November, but:

  • Khunjerab Pass (to China): open May 1 – December 31 (official), but snow can close it earlier
  • Fairy Meadows jeep road: May–October
  • Gilgit: Accessible by air year-round (when flights aren’t cancelled by weather)
