Pakistan in April: Mountain Roads Open, Karakoram Highway Clears, and Spring Peak
Plan your trip
April is Pakistan’s mountain-opening month. The Karakoram Highway — one of the world’s great engineering achievements, connecting China’s Xinjiang province to Pakistan through the highest mountain ranges on Earth — fully opens for the season as snow melts from the passes. Trekkers and mountaineers begin arriving to prepare for the June–September summit windows on K2, Nanga Parbat, and the Karakoram giants. The northern valleys are vivid with spring foliage.
Weather & Conditions
Lahore: 22–32°C. Warming rapidly. The comfortable window closes by May.
Islamabad: 18–28°C. Still pleasant but warming.
Hunza Valley: 8–20°C. Spring foliage. The apple and apricot orchards are leafing out after blossom season.
Gilgit and northern areas: 10–22°C. Mountain passes clearing. The Karakoram Highway is opening.
Skardu: 6–18°C. The gateway to K2 base camp is accessible.
Karakorum mountains: High passes are still snow-covered (Khunjerab Pass opens in May) but valley routes are clearing.
What to Do
Karakoram Highway (KKH) drive: The 1,300km highway from Islamabad through the Indus Valley, Kohistan, Karakoram range, and into China’s Xinjiang is one of the world’s most dramatic road journeys. April sees the southern and middle sections open with improved conditions. The Attabad Lake section (a new lake created by a 2010 landslide, now navigated by tunnel) is an extraordinary landscape. The highway passes through Chilas, Gilgit, Hunza, and to the Chinese border at Khunjerab Pass.
Fairy Meadows (base of Nanga Parbat): Accessible by a notoriously rough jeep road from Raikot Bridge followed by a 3-hour walk, the Fairy Meadows gives extraordinary views of Nanga Parbat (9th highest mountain, 8,126m). April sees the meadows free of snow and the wildflowers beginning. Camping and basic guesthouses available.
Skardu and K2 Base Camp preparations: Trekking operators in Skardu are receiving their first expedition groups in April for the summer K2 season. The town itself is surrounded by extraordinary desert mountain scenery. Shangrila Resort (Hotel) on the lake is one of Pakistan’s most photographed locations.
Kalash spring valley: The Kalash valleys in Chitral are in their spring prime in April. The traditional Kalash dress and the spring landscape of the valleys make for extraordinary photography.
Lahore’s last cool month: April is the last comfortable month for outdoor Lahore exploration before summer heat makes it challenging. Walk the Anarkali Bazaar, visit the Delhi Gate, and explore the Wazir Khan Mosque — widely considered the finest tilework mosque in the Subcontinent.
Festivals & Events
Kalash Joshi festival (variable April or May): The Kalash spring festival in the Chitral Hindu Kush valleys.
Shandur Polo Festival preparations: The world’s highest polo ground (3,700m) at Shandur Pass hosts Pakistan’s most celebrated polo festival in July. April sees the Gilgit and Chitral teams begin preparation.
Practical Tips
Khunjerab Pass (the China border crossing on the KKH) opens in May — April travelers reaching the high sections find the pass still closed. The valley route north of Sust is accessible.
April mountain weather: passes and high sections of the KKH can still have snow in early April. Check road conditions through Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism’s social media before departure.
Nanga Parbat base camp route: the 2-3 day approach from Fairy Meadows requires a guide. The local community at Tato village runs guiding services.
Who April Is For
Adventure travelers and trekkers beginning the northern mountain season. Photographers targeting the spring mountain landscape. Karakoram Highway road trip travelers catching the first fully open season. And lowland cultural travelers wrapping up their Lahore itinerary before May heat makes it challenging.
